Position Summary: The Food Safety and Quality Senior Professional (FSQSP) will manage ongoing Quality Assurance relationships with external suppliers across Wawa’s Supply Chain. The FSQSP will perform food safety and quality audits at supplier partner facilities, review third party audit reports, and use professional discernment to determine supplier approval status based on findings and outcomes. The position will support the Wawa Food Policy by reviewing third party animal welfare, PACO, and NAE reports and make recommendations based on findings, as well as review clean label product initiatives to assure ongoing food safety and quality.

Principal Duties

  • Perform food safety and quality (FSQ) audits at new and existing supplier facilities across the supply chain. Travel to facilities, complete on site audits of supplier FSQ systems and facilities, prepare and submit final audit report to supplier and internal partners, assess findings and use professional judgment to determine supplier approval status. Follow up with supplier to document corrective actions for non-conformances listed in the audit.
  • Review third party FSQ audits for new and existing supplier facilities and complete a summary report. Research the company facility and the products produced. Perform a risk assessment to determine relative risk of facility and the products to be provided to Wawa. Schedule audits at a frequency based on risk score according to existing protocol. For new facilities determine QA approval to move forward or recommend alternative action and communicate to internal partner teams (Sourcing, Marketing, Product Development).
  • Communicate directly with supplier QA to resolve substandard product issues identified through product assessments, recalls, or store/customer reports on substandard performance. Submit Corrective Action Requests to supplier and review/approve responses. Monitor product performance to assure effectiveness of supplier actions. Follow up with Stores as needed to assure resolution.
  • Review third party Animal Welfare audit reports from nursery to slaughter and assure that results align with the Wawa Animal Welfare Position Statement. Follow up with suppliers on any non-compliance issues noted and determine supplier plan to resolve.
  • Administer Clean Label Food Safety Questionnaire to suppliers modifying formulations to comply with the Wawa clean label objective. Review revised ingredient statements and production process flow to assure there is no known negative impact to FSQ. Work with suppliers to provide the required detail including shelf life studies and process flow diagrams. Communicate findings and recommendations to Product Development.
  • Administer Wawa No Antibiotics Ever/Raised Without Antibiotic Questionnaire to supplier and review responses. Verify NAE/RWA status/certification of supplier facilities by reviewing supplier process, USDA verified status certification, supplier company position statements, and associated audits. Assure that process includes separation of animals raised with antibiotics and how supplier handles sick animals. Review supplier Animal Welfare contract addendum and provide QA input as needed.
  • Utilize resources such as Professional Animal Auditor Certification, Animal Welfare Officer Certification, USDA, National Pork Board Pork Checkoff Transport Quality Assurance Certification, and National Pork Board PQA Plus Certification to understand best practices and the latest news on animal welfare topics to support the Wawa Food Policy.
  • Review product specifications submitted by suppliers for approval as assigned. Utilize product and industry technical knowledge to collaborate with Wawa Product Development and supplier to create a mutually agreed upon product specification that includes all supporting documentation. Approve the final specification from the QA perspective.
  • Respond to Applix Tickets for product categories as assigned. Follow up with suppliers and Stores as needed. Manage and close tickets in the system when issues are resolved.
  • Utilize product risk tool to understand emerging food safety issues. Remain current with applicable food regulations including the Food Safety Modernization Act and the FDA Food Code. Work cross-functionally to execute initiatives internally and with suppliers. Drive and communicate supplier FSQ concerns as needed to internal and external partners.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Biology or related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Quality Assurance role within the food manufacturing industry preferred
  • Knowledge or experience of quality system design for a variety of food products preferred
  • GFSI Certification in SQF, BRC, or related scheme preferred
  • Knowledge of or certification in animal welfare standards preferred
  • Food Safety auditing experience in manufacturing facilities preferred
  • Knowledge of food industry regulatory and GFSI standards required
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft products such as Excel and Access
