Job Summary and Mission
This job contributes to Starbucks success by providing experienced support and understanding of labeling and claims regulations to ensure our products are compliant. This position manages a diverse team working across the food and beverage portfolio (Starbucks Coffee, Teavana, La Boulange, Evolution Fresh, Tazo, Seattle’s Best Coffee, and Ethos Water) consulting, assessing, advising, and reviewing on labeling compliance following applicable rules and regulations. The work also includes reviewing and advising on marketing claims through substantiation and verification. Acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
Manage and coach a diverse team.
Regularly interact and strategize process improvement with director.
Some review and approval of label artwork and content, marketing material, digital assets in accordance with regulations and guidance.
Guide team on ingredient statements and adherence to all applicable rules, regulations and internal guardrails.
Provide guidance and vet product claims to ensure adherence to all applicable rules and regulations.
Responsible for managing the information and process to accurately enter regulatory product information into current systems.
Keep abreast of regulatory changes to information required for labeling purposes.
Provide technical leadership to the business by contributing label and nutrition guidance on technical issues and communicating the information to technical and non-technical audiences.
Collaborate cross functionally with various teams and clients in research & development, quality assurance, marketing, manufacturing, sales, customer service, vendors, and customers.
Build relationships with experts internally and externally using strong technical expertise to provide insight into emerging science and translate into potential product opportunities or reformulations.
Summary of Experience
Experience managing others 3-5 directs, teams above 10 (7+ years)
Experience in interpretation and application of food and beverage regulations in North America, International knowledge a plus (7+ years)
Experience with progressively more complex processes and product claims required to comply with food and beverage labeling requirements, including nutrition (7+ years)
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Current knowledge of FDA, USDA and CFIA guidelines and regulations.
Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or Nutrition or related field or related experience.
Computer proficient, savvy with MS Excel.
Able to use and navigate nutrition software program (eg. ESHA Genesis, Food Processor or similar).
Ability to regularly handle large volumes of technical reports and information in an organized manner, analyze information and capture conclusions.
Familiarity with reformulation of food products and food processing.
Ability to work independently without close supervision on a daily basis.
Ability to manage progress effectively in ambiguous and unstructured situations.
Ability to communicate effectively and influence internal and external customers.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver accurate outcomes.
Ability to multitask, maintain attention to detail and remain calm under pressure.
Ability to lead projects and motivate through influence.
