The Dairy Science Department at South Dakota State University is inviting applications for the position of Application Technologist Institute for Dairy Ingredient Processing. The candidate will be will serve as an interface between research conducted at the IDIP and dairy ingredient users and will be responsible for evaluating the performance of new ingredients and developing prototype products that utilize new dairy based ingredients.
The Application Technologist will be responsible for establishing relationships with key food and beverage manufactures and will develop new product prototypes utilizing dairy based ingredients produced at the Institute for dairy ingredient processing. The Application Technologist will be responsible for preparation of technical monographs and articles for trade publications that highlight the use of dairy based ingredients. The individual will be responsible for supervision, scheduling and training of student employees in the application lab and for inventory control of products, supplies and materials.
A Master of Science in Dairy, Food Science, Dairy Manufacturing, or Microbiology is required; must have experience in dairy product manufacture, analysis and quality control. Also must have a minimum of five years of experience in product development and experience in preparation of technical monographs and articles for trade publications. Demonstrate effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Prior experience with development of protein fortified milk based beverages and process cheese will be a plus.

SDSU is the state's largest and most comprehensive institution of higher learning. The Dairy Science Department includes undergraduate and graduate programs in dairy production and manufacturing with 12 full-time faculty members and approximately 85 undergraduate students. Facilities in the Dairy Science Department include the Dairy Research and Training Facility with housing for 140 head of lactating cows in a modern free-stall barn and parallel parlor as well as a new state of the art dairy processing plant. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,100 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29 and central to a growing dairy industry in South Dakota. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of close to 150,000.
