This position covers King County and the surrounding areas.  Candidate to live around geographic areas and will work out of their home.

The Food Safety Program strives to protect the public from injury and illness caused by food products that are contaminated, adulterated or otherwise unfit for consumption. This is accomplished primarily through surveillance, regulation and inspection of the dairy industry, egg industry, and the food processing and storage industry. Staff conducts more than 13,000 inspections and tests each year, including sampling food products, which are analyzed for pathogens, pesticide residues and standards. The program also investigates consumer complaints, and responds as needed to recalls, foodborne illness investigations and other food-related emergencies.


Performs inspections, investigations and/or surveillance of establishments that manufacture, process, hold or transport food products intended for public consumption.  Ensures compliance with the various licensing requirements for facility design, processing, sanitation, and product labeling. Assists with food product recalls and trace backs, food borne illness investigations and emergency response functions. Recommends and may apply enforcement action. May provide expert-witness testimony.

NOTE:  This position works out of their home and must be able to travel.  A valid driverís license is required. 


As a condition of employment, this position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Employees are required to pay regular union dues or non-association fees (due to religious tenets) within 30 calendar days following employment.




  This position may require moving objects and material weighing as much as 50 pounds.

  Applicant must be capable of performing the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

  Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions and work in an industrial or animal setting, negotiate wet or uneven surfaces, loud noises, and strong odors and maintain safety awareness/precautions.

  Must be able to work a flexible schedule with the possibility of extended hours.

  Must be able to travel with occasional overnight stays.


A Bachelorís degree involving major study in microbiology, food science, public health, biochemistry, dairy science, or a natural science in a closely allied field. (For those who will be graduating soon, a bachelorís degree must be provided prior to final hiring).
