Global Gapcertification is based on the essential elements for best practices for the global production of horticultural products. The aim is to ensure integrity, transparency and harmonization of global agricultural standards. USDAprovides an audit-based verification program that will attest to participants’ voluntary adherence to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) “ Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazards for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables” (FDA guidance document). Auditors are licensed fresh fruit and vegetable inspectors, and are trained in the technical specifications of the GAP and GHP Audit Verification Program. USDA-AMS has worked with the States to develop the program, and ensure program integrity, uniformity, and consistency nationwide.
We also participate in a GFSI audit of the packing and processing facilities for adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's), plant sanitation standards and employee hygiene. The food safety audit is conducted by a professionally trained staff of food safety auditors. Food processors who participate in the in-plant audit program receive a complete examination and technical assistance in all areas that affect product integrity, regulatory exposure and pesticide use.
