Purpose
As a Group Manager, Food Safety & QA, you will be responsible for
leading/managing the food safety and quality assurance staff, programs,
processes and practices for Owned Brand and “Distributed by Target” food
products. Responsibilities range from initial and on-going vendor
manufacturing facility approval to developing and implementing new food
safety, quality assurance and regulatory compliance programs, improving
product quality in the marketplace, and reducing guest complaint rates.

- Leading and managing a Food
Safety & Quality Assurance staff of approximately twelve
professionals, each with responsibility for supporting the
commercialization of new products, continuous product improvement, and
managing food safety or quality incidents for one or more Owned Brand
food categories
- Developing, improving and
providing processes, training and technical guidance to all staff
members to ensure food safety and quality assurance accountabilities
are consistently performed as required
- Leading and improving the
process and vendor food safety and product quality requirements for
the initial and on-going approval of all Owned Brand vendor food
manufacturing facilities, including the accuracy, completeness and
integrity of the facility approval status, ratings, and all related
documentation
- Managing the 3rd party Food
Safety & Quality Assurance audit program for the initial and
on-going review and approval for all Owned Brand vendor food
manufacturing facilities, domestic and international
- Leading and managing the guest
complaint rate reduction and corrective action programs to ensure that
all guest complaints are analyzed on a timely basis and the
appropriate corrective actions are taken by the vendor
- Leading, reviewing and
approving the development and maintenance of the Analytical and
Microbiological Specification Test Methods and Requirements for all
Owned Brand food product categories
- Managing comprehensive, concise
and objective monthly performance metrics – which are used to identify
and address the root causes of product quality issues for Owned Brand
foods
- Partnering with Sr. Buyers,
Buyers and Product Development team members across Owned Brand foods
to improve execution of the new product commercialization program, the
continuous product quality improvement program and Brand protection
discipline
- Participating and representing
Target with external trade and professional associations to maintain
food safety, product quality management, and technical regulatory
compliance expertise
Reporting/Working Relationships
Internal: Works closely with the
Merchandising teams; Owned Brand Sr. Buyers and Buyers; Owned Brand Product
Development team; Product Specifications team; Packaging team; Nutrition,
Labeling and Regulatory Compliance team; Guest Contacts and Product Quality
Review team; Retail Food Safety Audit, Recall, and Regulatory Relations
team; Food Operations; and Food Distribution.
External: Actively participates in external
trade and professional associations. Works with 3rd party audit providers,
3rd party technical service providers (including product retrieval), 3rd
party analytical and microbiological testing and food forensic
laboratories.
This position reports to the Director,
Food Safety & Quality Assurance.
Job Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- B.S. degree in Food Science,
Microbiology, Public Health or related scientific discipline
- 10+ years experience in
consumer packaged food product manufacturing or quality assurance
representing progressively increasing responsibilities and a range of
product categories and technologies
- 5+ years experience with a
demonstrated track record of leading and developing professional
talent
- Strong working knowledge of
technical regulatory requirements for the processing of consumer food
products, principles and practices of auditing and HACCP
- Strong leadership skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and
the ability to influence others
- Excellent communications skills
- Strong analytical and problem
solving skills
- Strong planning, organizational
and implementation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work
effectively in cross-functional team environments
- Strong computer skills
Desired Requirements:
- M.S/Ph.D
degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Public Health or related
scientific discipline
- Private label or contract
manufacturing experience
- Retail, in-store food
production experience
