Summary:

Provide technical leadership, service and systems end-to-end product & process support to Manufacturing, Global Alliances and/or other R&D Depts within The Hershey Company.

 

Under minimal direction, assumes primary responsibility for undertaking and executing fundamental applications research and development projects of significant importance, complexity, and scope with emphasis on solution of practical or theoretical problems where precedents may not exist. Supervises and coordinates the development, evaluation and applications efforts of projects having a major impact on the Company's current and/or future business interests. Undertakes product and process improvement projects as assigned, routinely initiating own projects and recommending termination of projects that are not consistent with the company business or technical strategic initiatives. Independently determines technical approaches to be explored as they apply to assigned project or self-initiated projects. Establish objectives and approaches to execute projects for self and junior level professionals. Secure appropriate information as necessary. Solve problems through expert level application of knowledge, experience, original thinking, and testing of hypothesis. Responsible for operation of manufacturing equipment for testing, optimization and training as required. Evaluate results, draw conclusions, make recommendations from data and implement change if approved. Under minimal direction, act as consultant throughout the Company on problems within Chocolate and Confectionery area of expertise and make authoritative technical recommendations regarding projects to be undertaken and implementation of results.

 

May participate in the development and implementation of product line extensions and processes. Interact closely with company wide, Sr. level professional and managerial staff in Manufacturing, Global Alliances, Marketing, Quality and Regulatory Compliance, Research/Development, Legal and Procurement departments regarding technical or practical problem solutions, the identification and evaluation of projects and decision-making on next steps.

Interact with other industries, institutions or licensee's as required to exchange information and ideas in area of expertise. Provide leadership and instruction to technicians and professionals assigned to assist on a project and provide coordination of efforts of other members of the project team as is necessary. May be responsible for all phases of an improvement/development project or program..

The incumbent is a fully competent technical resource in a specific or specialized field of two or more of the sciences being fully knowledgeable and conversant with the scope and potentialities of that field. Recognized as a company-identified Chocolate and/or Confections expert and acts as a consultant throughout the Company on problems within area of expertise. Makes authoritative technical recommendations regarding projects to be undertaken and implementation of results.

 

Responsibilities:

Provide technical leadership that supports the key financial measures and taskings of the corporations supply chain independently, under minimal direction manage multiple projects of large scale and significant importance or assume primary responsibility for undertaking and executing fundamental projects of extreme high complexity and scope related to products and processes for chocolates, candy and confectionery. Work is reviewed over relatively long periods of time for desired results. Expert level ability to combine the practical and the theoretical for resolving applications problems or for supervising and coordinating the development efforts of projects having a large and significant impact on the Company's current and/or future business interests. Undertakes product & process improvement projects routinely initiating own projects and recommending termination of projects that are not consistent with the company business or technical strategic initiatives. Independently determines technical approaches to be explored as the apply to projects. Derives solutions to problems through application of experience, business or technical expertise where little to no precedence exists. May coach, technically direct or manage a staff of up to 5 professionals or coops/interns.
Applies Process Management Principles and independent creative problem solving,. Maintains up to date expert level knowledge related to ingredients, formulation and processing in the technical areas of chocolate, confectionery, candies and related snack foods. Is proficient, demonstrates expert level interpersonal and technical knowledge in the areas of change management (Product Change Management, Quality Through Excellence, Product Excellence Program, Good Manufacturing Practices, Product and Process Specification Development and Maintenance, SAP Recipe Management System) and recommends improvements to facilitate project completion in an expedient fashion . Provides updates to operations and related Technical Depts. throughout the company that allows for timely decision making and the execution of testing schedules in an effective manner to meet the business needs.
Champion Continuous Improvement . As a company identified expert utilizes technical training and skills in the discovery and application of technologies and determines benefits that they would have when applied to the Hershey product line. Participates as an active member and functional sub team leader on company wide multifunctional Product Excellence teams. Provides technical guidance/expertise throughout The Hershey Company on ingredient interactions, evaluation and optimization of procedural/equipment problems related to product, process, rework, overweight and waste management systems. Develops product line extensions through application of new processes, ingredients and formulation technology. Evaluates and facilitates effective transfer and optimization of new technology, ingredients and processes into manufacturing operations for the improvement of shelf stability, margins and operations efficiency.
Training, consulting and coordination of technical strategic initiatives. As a recognized technical and operations expert within the corporation reviews, identifies, prioritizes, evaluates, recommends, designs and implements studies that determine process capability and the feasibility of proposed changes. Reviews results of tests related to the evaluation of strategic technical advancements with others and recommends further testing and/or changes deemed necessary to reduce waste, rework, overweights, product giveaway and that assures process capacity to meet the business plan. Identifies and applies methods of measuring the benefits of recommendations for improvement of Economic Profit. Conducts follow up reviews and operator training to assure implementation and sustainability of improvements.

Qualifications:

Education/ Experience:

 

Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Chemistry or related science plus 12 years of applicable work experience, or a Master's Degree with 10 years applicable experience. Related training in confectionery, chocolate and food science beneficial.


Work experience must be in a multi-plant / multi-product foods manufacturing and technical environment with at least 6 years in the confectionery and chocolate industry.
