*This is a restricted position that has been developed as part of a
Cooperative Agreement with the Food and Drug Administration and will last
until August 31, 2013, however the cooperative agreement has the potential
The ideal candidate will possess significant knowledge of food safety practices and principles; the regulatory inspection and enforcement process, product labeling, food processing, food microbiology & Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) concepts. A thorough understanding of food safety laws, regulations and compliance activities, the preparation legal case files; and a thorough knowledge of the court system. Strong research and oral/written communication skills. The ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations; to perform technical science based research relative to food, dietary supplement and regulatory related issues; to make independent technical decisions; and to compose relevant standard operating procedures, policies, guidelines and other documents is necessary. Additionally, the ability to work both independently and in a team environment; be self motivated; effectively plan and organize work activities and successfully interact with the food safety staff, the public, the food industry and other regulatory agencies is needed. Solid computer skills are a must. A valid Virginia Drivers License is required.
Degree in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science or a related field. Knowledge of Virginia's court system and experience relative to the interpretation and enforcement of laws, regulations and compliance processes; conducting hearings and developing court cases; reviewing inspection activities and reports; writing regulations; experience managing compliance activities and actions; evaluating laws/regulations and making recommendations; and auditing inspection reports is also preferred along with considerable experience working with the public and the food industry. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
Final candidate must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check. Additionally, in accordance with the Code of Virginia, incumbents of this position must complete a Statement of Economic Interests form upon hire and annually thereafter.
