Officials investigate 3 salmonella cases in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Health officials are investigating three salmonella cases in Utah involving the same strain that has sickened more than 450 people in 43 states.

Lynchburg, Va.-based Peanut Corp. of America has recalled 21 lots of peanut butter made since July 1 at its plant in Blakely, Ga., because of possible contamination from the bacteria.

Marilee Poulson, an epidemiologist with the Utah Department of Health, says it's unclear how the Utah residents became ill in October, November and December.

She says the recalled peanut butter was not sold in the state.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 10 people have been sickened in neighboring states, including Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada and Colorado.
