Position Summary:

The Senior Food Technologist operates as a project leader and/or member of a cross functional product development team to support the initiatives, business plan, and objectives of High Liner Foods.

Environment:

The Senior Food Technologist applies scientific and engineering principles in research, development, production technology, quality control, packaging, processing and utilization of foods to design, develop, and produce new and/or improved products. This position plays a major role in the creation of new products and therefore plays an important part in supporting HLF's overall strategic goals.

The Senior Food Technologists work environment is characterized by close cooperation with other Food Technologists, Technicians, Chefs, Quality Assurance, Production, Procurement, Regulatory, and Sales & Marketing personnel in support of all business channels. Excellent interpersonal, time management, flexibility, and ability to work in a fast paced, high stress environment are essential. Some travel between plants and in support of Sales & Marketing product demonstrations, seminars, and training is required.

Specific Accountabilities:

Formulates new products and modifies existing product formulas based on general and/or specific input from Sales and Marketing channels. An in depth knowledge of coating technology is required.

Designs, coordinates, and executes new product line test runs. Analyzes line test results and collaborates with process engineers, production staff, packaging, and Marketing specialists to ensure manufactured product is within desired target cost parameters, performance, and organoleptic attributes.

Monitors initial production runs until product parameters are met.

Analyzes line test results and recommends appropriate adjustments to product formulas and/or processes to keep manufactured product within desired target cost parameters and organoleptic attributes.

Troubleshoots and recommends modifications to existing product formulas and/or processes to improve productivity, quality and/or product cost.

Generates preliminary, tentative, and finished product specifications for new processes. Modifies existing product specifications reflecting changes to formulas and/or processes.
Assist Engineering, Production, Accounting, Purchasing, Marketing, Labeling, and QA in the completion of development related projects.

Maintains a thorough understanding of US food labeling laws and regulations.

Prepares sample product and conducts additional duties as required for:

Cooking instructions
Nutritional calculations/analysis
Product photography
Shelf-life studies
Product cuttings
Package development
Focus Groups

Generates and maintains accurate laboratory and project work documentation.

Maintains accurate work documentation and records.

Supports Sales and Marketing channels with customer presentations both on and off-site. This requires formal "customer facing" in a professional manner with a sound working knowledge of company products, processes and capabilities.

Assists Culinary with product demonstrations, luncheons, seminars, food shows, focus groups, etc. Maintains "cutting edge" knowledge of food manufacturing processes, ingredients and raw materials as they apply to the seafood industry and the food industry as a whole.

Substitutes for R&D Technicians for sample packing, shipment, laboratory maintenance, etc. as required.

Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Job Specifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. M.S. in Food Science or related degree with 3 - 5 years experience or B.S. in Food Science or related degree with 5+ years experience. Culinary training is a plus. Seafood experience is a plus.

Able to handle fast paced and high stress environments.

Excellent interpersonal & communications skills

Self motivated, able to work with little supervision, eagerness to learn

MS Office aptitude (MS Work, MS Excel), Lotus Notes

Valid US driverís license and vehicle to commute to other plant locations


Physical Environment:

Office Environment:
The noise level in the office work environment is moderately quiet.

Plant Environment:
The plant work environment will expose the employee to loud noise, food grade dust & odors, moving & vibrating machinery, heavy equipment, powered industrial trucks, heights, traffic, anhydrous ammonia, oil and electricity. The employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, rain, snow, dust, smoke and odors.

Allergens found inside the plant include: fish, shellfish, nuts, eggs, wheat, soy, milk and coconut.

The employee must have visual acuity sufficient to operate a motor vehicle and digital camera, as well as other office and position equipment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
