Job Description

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership, leverages resources, develops relationships and provides coordination for projects and technologies
  • Responsible for developing and implementing strategies that incorporate business and commercial objectives
  • Advances technical expertise and knowledge within the Research and Development Department to support new product development, identify and create new platforms that are commercially viable, and meets current trends and future needs to create differentiation in the market
  • Utilizes both company’s and third party technologies to deliver key projects
  • Directs and coordinates research and development activities across brands, categories, and channels
  • Provides technical advice to Senior Management on advances and developments within the scientific community that may be of benefit to the company
  • Ensures new product development fits in with existing manufacturing capabilities and works with Operations to develop new processes where required to ensure successful scale up and production of products at manufacturing sites
  • Reviews and analyzes proposals submitted to determine if benefits derived and possible applications justify expenditures and warrant resources
  • Approves and submits proposals considered feasible to Management for consideration and allocation of funds or allocates funds from department budget
  • Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring projects, such as preparation of records of expenditures and research findings, progress reports, and staff meetings, in order to inform management of current status of each project
  • Develops relationships with key customers and improves collaboration with these stakeholders
  • Networks with outside resources – universities, etc. – to keep up to date with ongoing research
  • Recruits, hires, and trains department staff, evaluates staff performance, and develops goals and objectives for staff
  • Responsible for resource alignment to ensure key projects are delivered on time

Required Skills

  • Masters or PHD in Food Science or Meat Science
  • 10+ years experience working with meat and meat technology
  • Technical expertise in meat ingredient applications technology
  • Experience managing a group of technical staff
  • Ability to influence and persuade others collaboratively
  • Ability to work through and with diverse personalities while being tactful and professional
  • Available to travel as needed
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff while maintaining an environment conducive to creativity
