Position Summary: The Office of School Food provides all students of New York City with healthy meals. The Food Safety Specialist is an integral part of ensuring food safety through contractual regulations and food safety procedures. The Food Safety Specialist will assist the Food Safety Supervisor in adhering to Department of Education (DOE), City, State and Federal mandated rules, regulations and guidelines related to grading and procuring food and food related products. Performs related work.

Reports to: Food Safety Supervisor

Direct Reports: Food Safety and Food Quality Monitors.

Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with operations supervisors and staffs to ensure that proper food handling procedures are followed in all schools. Follows-up with directors and assistant directors regarding best practices and liaisons with the City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on particular issues of concern that affect multiple city agencies.


  • Supervises Food Safety and Food Quality Monitors in the performance of their duties, prepares work assignments and schedules and prioritizes visits to School Food kitchens for inspection of their contractual compliance to food related products specifications.
  • Analyzes data collected by Food Safety and Food Quality Monitors during food safety visits to School Food kitchens to determine the quality of food received by the vendors. Makes determinations via analysis of follow up visits to schools and communication with vendors with regard to the quality of the food products that have been received.
  • Manages the Food Safety Unit and ensures that proper procedures are being effectively communicated and followed throughout the organization.
  • Acts as the DOE liaison to vendors and City agencies, such as the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, regarding all aspects of food quality compliance.
  • Participates in establishing acceptable brands and new products for the students of NYC.
  • Maintains detailed reports and findings and keeps track of pertinent information for inclusion in the executive management reports.

Qualification Requirements:


  1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four (4) years of satisfactory full-time experience, purchasing or inspecting supplies, materials and/or products such as: paints, linoleum, hose, sand, brick, wire, shades, hardware and tools; plumbing, electrical machine shop, building and cleaning supplies; furnishings and furniture, lumber and wood related products; metals; equipment; foods, drugs, and chemicals; fuel; textiles; printing, stationery and other sundry items; or
  2. An associate degree from an accredited college, plus three (3) years of satisfactory fulltime experience as described in '1' above; or
  3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, plus one (1) year of satisfactory full-time satisfactory experience as described in '1' above; or
  4. Undergraduate college credit may be substituted for experience on the basis of 45 semester credits from an accredited college for one (1) year of experience. However, all candidates must have a high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least one (1) year of satisfactory full-time experience as described in '1' above.

License Requirement

A motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York in good standing at the time of and during the course of employment.


  • Extensive experience in effective communication.
  • General knowledge of the DOE’s food safety and/or restaurant management operation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel.

Salary: $48,435 +
