Title: Research Scientist
Reports to: Product Development Manager


POSITION OBJECTIVES

Red Gold employees are truly a component of the company’s success in the market. This position is responsible to research new equipment and packaging materials, formulate new products, enhance current product formulas, and to develop formulas to provide exact matches for competitive products. Responsibilities also include aiding in the implementation of policies, specifications and procedures pertaining to research and product development. Due to the dynamic nature of our business, duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Research & Process Analysis (45%)
• Process equipment analysis
o Thermal process
o Evaporation process
• Packaging equipment analysis
o Aseptic process
• Packaging material testing and analysis
• Spoilage research, analysis and reporting
• Process cost review, analysis and recommendations/proposals to management
• Paste usage and paste quality analysis and reporting
• Adhering to all applicable food safety regulations and guidelines

Planning, Development & Formulation (45%)
• Develop new formulas
• Formulate product exact matches
• Determine purpose of project and applications that can be utilized
• Work with Cost Accountant and Purchasing to determine a formula’s ingredient and process costs
o Review and trial ingredient alternatives for cost savings
• Develop project proposals
• Scientific and analytical testing of new products
• Nutritional labeling
• Communicate with the customer and sales teams on formulas and project status

R& D Project Work (10%)
• Coordinate, facilitate or lead R & D projects, as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education
• 4 year degree in Food Science or related technical discipline
• Certifications not required, however, certifications in the following areas are valuable: Food Sanitation, HAACP, SQF, Better Processing

Skills

Experience and Skills
• 5-7 years R & D work experience – food/beverage environment preferred
• Spice and flavor expertise
• Computer knowledge required – MS Office, (especially Excel)
• AS400 experience desirable, but not required

• Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
• Problem Solver
• Analytical
• Confident – able to make decisions in a fast-paced environment
