|
ROLE
The role of the Senior Food Scientist at Ralston Foods is to develop new
products, improve existing products and support existing products in the
marketplace. The product line is RTE cereals, Hot cereals, and Cereal based
snacks. The researcher is responsible for the product design, managing
technical responsibilities within projects, product maintenance work, and
applying professional knowledge and technical skills. Additional roles are
to provide technical expertise to the manufacturing facilities, develop an
awareness of technologies used by other cereal and food manufacturers, and
assist in establishing new policies and procedures that will assure overall
customer satisfaction.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Plan, execute, evaluate and report on research activities for assigned
product development and improvement projects:
- Plan, conduct and evaluate
pilot plant and plant research.
- Utilize project management
tools to manage resources and critical paths.
- Design products that meet
customer’s expectations.
- Specify raw materials and
develop formulas.
- Assist engineers in
modifying or specifying equipment.
- Accurately develop
formulas, specifications and label declarations.
- Maintain accurate records
of work activities and communicate results.
- Influence project direction
based on technical discoveries.
· Act as
the technical expert for assigned maintenance products:
- Respond to customer
inquiries or requests.
- Maintain accurate
specifications.
- Ensure product design is in
compliance to specifications and nutritional label.
- Actively participate with
technical investigations into issues involving
ingredients/formulation/processing and investigations for cost
savings.
Leadership role:
- Drives results through applied
research and develops new project concepts
- Considered a technical “go
to” for marketing, sales, and operations on new concepts and problems.
- Assists in establishing new
policies/procedures and leads by example.
- Helps establish department’s
goals and plans to achieve them.
- Mentors junior researchers
while also being mentored by principal scientists.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend classes/seminars to
improve technical and interpersonal skills. Apply learning in project
tasks.
- Receive training on new
software.
- Develop personal and
performance goals.
- Stay appraised of the latest
formulation/processing technologies through technical literature,
suppliers and seminars.
- Maintain a network of
industrial contacts and develop a network of consultant contacts.
- Develop understanding of new
processes and evaluate whether portions of that process can be applied
to other products/projects.
- Review
project costs against department budget when significant costs are
expected. Manage plant costs (testing and implementation).

Job
Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. Degree in Food
Science (IFT Minimum Standards) or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 to 7 years experience in product development.
- Able to walk / stand for up
to 70% of the time while performing daily tasks (pilot and plant
trials).
- Able to support product
testing / projects on production floors requiring travel up and down
stairs and ladders to platforms. The mills are not climate controlled
and experience temperature variation throughout the year. Some floors
can reach excess of 100°F during the months of June – August.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Occasional travel is
required.
- A flexible
schedule is also required to support testing as necessary.
Occasionally, plant tests must be conducted during off shifts or even
on weekends.
