Food Technologist Position Summary:

The goal of this position is to prepare and position candidates to gain knowledge, experience and exposure to all facets of food manufacturing operation(s). Eventually this should give the successful candidate the opportunity to fill higher level positions in Quality, Manufacturing, Logistics or R&D. This is an entry level, developmental position that reports directly to the plant QA manager with a liaison function to other operational areas. Leads and/or supports special projects to improve operational performance. This position reports through one manufacturing facility but could occasionally work with or within all Wisconsin manufacturing facilities on developmental assignments/projects on an as needed basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Quality related

Reads information such as product processing sheets, and specification sheets, to verify that records adhere to quality assurance specifications.

Oversee Audit Corrective Action Process by writing and submitting audit report to supervisory personnel.

Facilitates third party audits by following quality audit process, including: preparation, performance, reporting and closure phases.

Audits products to determine compliance with order specifications, Sargento’s Quality Systems policies, compliance with legal requirements, and conformance to customer specified standards

Accurately performs laboratory tests as determined by Sargento’s Quality Assurance plan. Insures that accredited methods are used including the calibration and validation of tests and test equipment.

Evaluates data and writes reports to validate or indicate deviations from existing standards.

Assists with product retrievals/recalls and handles confidential information.
Verifies that critical-to-process parameters, including verification of food safety systems.

Assesses process capability through inspection, technical discussion, capability studies, and audits.

Develops knowledge and understanding of HACCP and participates on plant HACCP teams.

Develop ability to test incoming materials in addition to cheese and ingredients, such as: corrugated, film, pallets

Assists in the monitoring of pest control activities.

Develops knowledge and experience in using SAP and Documentum software programs to generate information that can be utilized throughout the other position duties

Plant related

Develop understanding of plant metrics: goals, MES, safety, certified training

Evaluate operations and suggest improvements in all related areas: maintenance, production, receiving, quality, overall performance.

Develop leadership abilities through acting as a relief supervisor in production departments.

Develop understanding of sanitation and has the ability to perform and improve sanitation on various pieces of production equipment, process lines and environmentally.

Development related

Leads and facilitates meetings and provides quality support on continuous improvement projects throughout organization.

Leads project improvement team(s) to a conclusion

Develop an understanding of how products are costed and successfully lead/complete selected product costings.

Learn and participate in yearly budgeting process for manufacturing plants.

Through working with R&D in the development of new products learns the product development process as applied to functional areas including Quality, Manufacturing, R&D, Operation Services and Marketing.

Evaluate new equipment for areas of concern: quality of product, safety, training, performance.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has limited supervisory responsibilities, but is expected to be able to step in and act as a relief Production Supervisor, act as Project Team Leader, or oversee Quality Assurance Technician on quality related projects as needed.

This is a developmental position. It is expected that the individual(s) in this position will gain the skills and experience necessary and demonstrate performance at a level that will make them a successful candidate for an available promotional opportunity within the Operations Group between six months and two years from commencing employment in the position.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Valid Driver’s License required.
