Overview:

Support development and ensure execution of standardized policies, procedures, prerequisite programs, and Food Safety Preventative Measures plans to ensure successful implementation of Sysco’s Operating Company (OpCo) Food Safety & Quality Assurance  (FSQA) Programs across Sysco.  Provide food safety and quality assurance technical assistance/information to Sysco Operating Company’s and Customers. Develop and manage the implementation of Sysco’s Supplier Approval Program for non-branded suppliers.  Assist in the development, execution, and on-going maintenance of training programs pertinent to OpCo FSQA personnel for the successful execution of Sysco’s FSQA programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Support development and manage implementation of standardized food safety programs and inspection/audit procedures at Sysco OpCos from procurement through delivery to ensure compliance of products marketed by Sysco to all applicable Food Safety regulations (ex. FSMA, SFTA, USDA FSIS HACCP Regulations for Meat & Poultry, Shell Egg Food Safety, FDA Seafood HACCP, et al) as well as any mutually agreed upon specifications / requirements for Multi-unit Account Customer (MUA) Customers.  
  • Establish audit tools and reporting for Key Food Safety Performance Indicators (KPI) to demonstrate compliance with Sysco’s FSQA Programs and pertinent Regulations. Use data from the KPI’s to manage process improvement initiatives or projects to further mitigate Sysco’s food safety risk and to differentiate Sysco from its competitors. 
  • Complete formal OpCo Visit Reports to document results of FSQA Program audits and provide feedback necessary to ensure compliance with Sysco FSQA Program and any Regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on OpCo Independent Third Party Audit, Customer Second Party, and/or Regulatory Audit/Visit results and corrective actions for non-conformances.  Support OpCo FSQA personnel to respond to these audits.
  • Implement and manage compliance with the Sysco Supplier Approval program for non-branded suppliers.  Implement and manage compliance with Sysco’s participation in certification audit programs associated with the Global Food Safety Initiative.
  • Support the design, development, and implementation of additional Food Safety and Quality Assurance programs and inspection/audit procedures as needed to ensure compliance of Sysco Branded and/or non-branded products to regulatory requirements and/or agreed upon MUA specifications/food safety requirements.
  • Complete formal FSQA Program reassessment on an annual basis or upon any food safety system change and/or regulation that would mandate reassessment.  Communicate changes in FSQA to OpCos and other necessary stakeholders.
  • Establish on-going mutually beneficial relationships with MUA customers, liaise with MUA Customer and OpCos to evaluate and respond to customer driven impacts affecting FSQA programs, and provide technical support to address issues related to Food Safety during independent or customer audits or issues with products involving food safety.
  • Support implementation of Sysco OpCo FSQA programs, projects, correspondence, training & development initiatives, and document control programs.
  • Complete any other essential job functions as assigned by supervisor.
  • Travel is required 30-50% of time (1.5 - 3 out of 5 days per week).

OCCASIONAL/MARGINAL JOB DUTIES:

Provide assistance, when necessary, to other Sysco corporate QA programs associated with Sysco Brand Supplier Approval, Approved Supplier Plant Visits, on-going monitoring of Suppliers and Products, Product Evaluations, and responding to customer issues.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:  

Incumbent frequently interacts with the following: Sysco OpCo Operations, Merchandising, Sales, and Executive Personnel, Sysco Corporate Merchandising and Supply Chain Services (SMS) Business Center Merchandising Personnel, corporate Quality Assurance Department, Customers, and Supplier personnel at all levels.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Agricultural Science, Biological Science, or related area from an accredited four-year college or university strongly preferred.
  • At least three years experience in Distribution Center Foodservice Operations, Quality Assurance/Control, R&D or Supplier Production/Operations required.
  • Comparable work experience will be evaluated for non-degreed candidates (High School Diploma and 7 years of work experience in Distribution Food service Operations, Quality Assurance/Control, R&D or Supplier Production/Operations.)
  • Formal job training in Sysco SWMS/SUS or other systems, HACCP, knowledge of USDA/FDA regulations would be beneficial. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Travel is required 30-50% of time (1.5 - 3 out of 5 days per week).

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Incumbent must demonstrate ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, as well as to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Incumbent must demonstrate ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, as well as have ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

 REASONING ABILITY:  Incumbent must demonstrate ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Incumbent must demonstrate ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Valid driver’s license.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Ability to use personal computer, lab equipment, food preparation equipment and office communication equipment.

Corrected vision required for sensory analysis to identify color, clarity.  Warehouse and plant audits also require close and distance vision to judge GMPs; peripheral vision and depth perception mandatory for safety.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Plant audits/inspections and working at remote in-transit warehouses and Sysco Operating Companies contain both moderate/loud noise and exposure to fumes and mechanical hazards.
