Kellogg Company has a new opportunity available for a Senior Food Safety Scientist in Battle Creek, MI. The Senior Food Safety Scientist leads development of policies and standards to ensure Kellogg products meet food safety expectations throughout the entire product life cycle. This role provides guidance, advice and interpretation to Research, Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering and Procurement on food safety related programs and issues and utilizes interactions with external resources and partners to identify and monitor emerging issues and technologies that have an impact on Kellogg.

Responsibilities include:
1. Initiates and maintains surveillance of external sources on global issues relating to the safety and regulatory compliance of ingredients and potential contaminants. Assesses risks and, using technical knowledge of Kellogg business, notifies appropriate senior management and technical personnel of potential issues prior to their occurrence.
2. Provides communications and recommendations to Quality, Communications, Consumer Affairs, Marketing, Plants, and Legal on the food safety implications of new product formulations or ingredient changes. Directs review of new product formulas for allergy issues, microbiological safety, Kellogg practices and regulatory compliance.
3. Conducts microbiological and toxicological research on food ingredients and manufacturing processes to determine effectiveness of hazard mitigation steps. Will determine microbial lethality of low-moisture food manufacturing processes utilizing mathematical modeling and surrogate challenge studies.
4. Provides information, risk assessment, and recommendations for courses of action to Crisis Management Team on issues involving food safety. Uses judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive information to minimize Company exposure to and liability for food safety related incidences.
5. Manages the design, execution, and follow-up of food safety programs including allergens, microbiological issues, foreign material and any other food safety issues that could pose a risk to human health. Program development will span creation of vendor or manufacturing practices to prevent contamination to design of statistical sampling plans to verify compliance to standards.
6. Strengthens food safety understanding throughout the organization through training and other knowledge management activities.

Job responsibilities require travel (15-25%)

 

Position Requirements:

 

Minimum:
Position requires a Ph.D. in Microbiology / Food Toxicology / Chemistry or related area and at least 4-6 years food industry experience OR an M.S. in Microbiology / Food Toxicology / Chemistry or related area and 6-8 years food industry experience.

Reports to Senior Director, Food Safety. The individual must have the ability to manage 1-3 scientists and/or cross functional teams

The individual should have knowledge and ability to integrate food law, food
technology, food chemistry, microbiology, cereal science and agricultural practice. The individual should possess leadership and communication skills, and diplomacy that will promote good relations with all facets of management and other technical and scientific disciplines in the effective execution of projects to accomplish corporate objectives. This individual must also be able to function effectively as a project manager, planner, coordinator, communicator, and scientific resource.

This job involves extended work schedules and time commitments, tight time deadlines and changing priorities. Incumbent must be able to make sound decisions quickly and at times with incomplete information.
