This position is responsible for hands-on, day-to-day new product development, product optimization and cost optimization activities across all JBSS business channels.  As part of these activities, this position will play a key role in fulfilling the numerous sample requests that R&D receives.  The individual in this role will also be assigned key customer relationships and will serve as the JBSS technical liaison to these customers. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understanding and mastery of the JBSS product development process from concept through first production
  • Collaboration with internal (Marketing, Sales) and external customers on new item and sample requests to ensure objectives are being addressed clearly, efficiently, and on-time.
  • Leveraging of external suppliers for necessary new raw materials, flavors, etc.
  • Working with internal resources (R&D team, Production, Accounting, Procurement, etc.) to develop innovative and on-trend formulas that are compatible with JBSS capabilities
  • Documentation of raw material and finished good specifications and integration into JBSS systems.
  • Development of draft ingredient statements and NLEA panels
  • Collaboration with Technical Services on allergen, Kosher, labeling, specification and claims issues
  • Integration into JBSS production working with schedulers, supervisors, operators, packaging, QA, etc. to scale-up and commercialize products 
  • Timely and efficient response to Sample Requests
  • Collaboration with requestor on details, timing, and quantities required
  • Efficient and creative utilization of outside suppliers
  • Management of multiple simultaneous requests and priorities
  • Utilization and mastery of Product Vision R&D software
  • Assist with start-up and conversion from Genesis
  • Play active role in data entry and database upkeep
  • Act as liaison between R&D and Technical Services
  • Documentation of JBSS processes and procedures and updating and maintenance of R&D records
  • Collaborations with Procurement and Production on cost optimization projects
  • Other duties / tasks / special projects as assigned by the Director of R&D
  • Responsible for manufacturing, distributing and consistently maintaining safe and quality food by following good manufacturing practices, allergen controls, food defense, HACCP and SQF requirements.
  • Responsible for immediately reporting all food safety and quality issues to your manager.
  • Responsible for partnering with others; Sharing knowledge, skills and information within your team and across functional areas.
  • Responsible for enhancing technical and functional competencies, as well as professional and leadership development.


BS Degree in Food Science / Technology.  4 to 6 years experience in the food industry working in R&D and/or product development.  Proven track record of culinary and technical innovation with food or beverage products is required.  Experience in regulatory is essential, and experience with Product Vision software is highly desirable. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required.  Excellent communication and cross-functional teamwork skills are a must.
