Position Description

Are you a college student looking for an internship this summer? Are you looking to gain valuable hands-on experience? Do you want to work on challenging projects? Do you want to network with professionals to develop skills beyond what you can learn in a classroom? If yes, then an internship at Publix may be the perfect fit for you.

Our Summer Internships will occur from May 20th through August 2nd at our company facilities in Lakeland, FL. Interns are offered competitive pay and are generally expected to work 40 hours per week, although this varies by department. We partner with Florida Southern College to provide housing for our out-of-town interns. As an intern, you will attend luncheons with Publix executives, participate in a local community service event, enjoy several after-work socials, receive performance evaluations twice during the summer to evaluate your progress, and give an end-of-summer presentation to a large group of Publix leaders. Interns leave Publix at the end of the summer knowing they have made a valuable contribution to the organization with an experience that helps them grow professionally and personally.

The primary responsibilities for this position include:

assist in the development and implementation of food safety programs
conduct risk-based food safety assessments in the retail grocery environment
conduct research on special food safety projects
assist with improving the overall food safety programs associated with fresh food handling and production
collect, review and evaluate scientific data associated with retail grocery
data entry, and
report analysis.

Required Qualifications

The required qualifications for this position include:

must be a rising Junior or higher majoring in Food Science, Food Safety or Microbiology
must be 20 years of age or older
must have a valid driver license, and maintain an excellent driving record
solid understanding of environmental health and food safety practices
must be able to stand for long periods of time within the retail store
strong organizational and time management skills
excellent interpersonal skills and attention to detail
ability to understand and interpret laws and regulations
intermediate knowledge of Excel, Word, and Power Point
ability to work flexible hours
ability to work independently and in a team environment
ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
ability to handle and maintain confidential information
excellent communication skills (both verbally and written)
good human relation skills ( the ability to work well with others and be a team member)
obvious enthusiasm, initiative, and pride in work,
commitment to Publix and our Mission.
