Food Technologist


 

Crystal Farms cheese processing plant is located in Lake Mills, Wisconsin where we have access to the best cheese from select dairies throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest. It's clearly one reason why since 1926, we've accomplished our primary goal of providing you high quality products at a better value than bigger national brands. Today we are the third largest brand of shredded, chunk and processed single cheese in the country.



DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE:


Ensures product safety and quality by auditing, evaluating, and providing co-packers and suppliers follow-up to determine if they are meeting the required standards set by Crystal Farms, the MFI food safety objectives, and the dairy industry.  Coordinates specification initiation and updates/changes with procurement, quality, distribution chain, and co-packer/suppliers. Has advanced knowledge in cheese technology, grading, functionality, defects, and available supply effectiveness for Crystal Farms’ needs.

 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

  1. Audit supplier/co-packer manufacturing facilities to ensure that they meet required standards for food safety and product quality. Performs follow-up required.
  2. Participate in the internal distribution/warehouse audit team.
  3. Update and maintain file for nutritional data used for labeling our product.  Determine when nutritional data testing is necessary.
  4. Maintain, update, and initiate product specifications, working with procurement, supply chain, and quality, to provide the most up-to-date specification details.
  5. Request and track that all documents are received from supplier, co-packer.
  6. Maintain the supplier/co-packer complaint tracking log and provide each co-pack supplier monthly complaint details.
  7. Provide quality specific answers to customer question/issue.
  8. Participate in the SQF team project and specifically maintain and update Crystal Farms corporate specific procedures and policies.
  9. Provides back-up function to the Director of Quality in the area of product labeling, product evaluation, shelf life studies, and problem solving.
  10. Provide back-up function to the Quality Auditor and is able to audit products at receipt to be sure they meet the quality requirements set forth by Crystal Farms and perform the follow-up to issues noted.
  11. Perform basic cheese tests for microbiology and chemistry using our lab in Lake Mills.
  12. Required to travel
  13. Perform all other job duties assigned.  

Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:  

  

  1. A Bachelor's degree in Dairy Science or Food Science with emphasis on Dairy Manufacturing.
  2. Accurate and detail oriented.
  3. Knowledge of how cheese is made and what changes affect the quality of the product.
  4. Knowledge of production processes and procedures for making, converting, and packaging cheese.
  5. Ability to recognize a problem, combines pieces of information, and use deductive reasoning to solve the problem.
  6. Proficient in MS Office, with advanced abilities in Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint.
  7. Good time management and the ability to manage one’s own time.
  8. Strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills and the ability to interact with all levels within the corporation.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/REQUIREMENTS: 
 

  1. Smelling, touching, sitting, driving, flying, kneeling, crouching, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motion, standing, ability to taste
  2. Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  3. Bending, stooping, crouching, and twisting repeatedly.
