Food Safety / Factory Hygienist-12001327 – Spartanburg, SC


The plant hygienist, under the direction of the Quality Assurance Manager, provides direction / leadership in GMP, sanitation, Pest Control and hygienic design programs. The position requires an in-depth knowledge of sanitation/GMP principles, methods, and technology. This position also requires effective communication skills to work with a variety of cross-functional customers (QA, Operations, Engineers, Regulators) both in-house and outside the company to assure the plant is aware of and continuously improving overall plant sanitation.


1. Provides a support / guardian role in the development, validation, and assessment of the factory sanitation program to insure all products are manufactured in a sanitary and wholesome environment. The hygienist is responsible for being the guardian to insure that the plant's sanitation programs address the facility environment (internal/external) as well as the processing and supporting equipment. When fully implemented, the program should have validated SSOP's for all sanitation needs. The Hygienist is responsible for insuring that the effective/efficient cleaning of non-product contact equipment is managed through a MSS. All cleaning programs must comply with Nestle internal policies and procedures, as well as with any regulatory (Federal, State, Local) requirements. In the event these programs are not satisfactorily meeting regulatory or Nestle standards it is his / her responsibility to escalate concerns and take steps necessary to catalyze change. The hygienist will also be a primary contact with the 3rd party Sanitation partner and assure that joint factory specific objectives are established and achieved.
2.Assure that an Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) is developed, implemented, and maintained to support a pest free environment. The hygienist must be knowledgeable and trained in IPM principles. As manager of this program, the hygienist will be the primary contact with 3rd party Pest Control partner and assure that joint factory specific objectives are established and achieved.
3.Assist in the development and maintenance of the factory allergen control program. This will include the development and completion of allergen cleaning validations where appropriate.
4.The hygienist will provide leadership/direction in establishing an effective process to assure proactive input on sanitary design issues at the factory for existing and new processes as well as the factory structure.
5.Responsible for the implementation of a pathogen monitoring program
6.Perform supplier audits and other audits as assigned.
7.Possibility of having direct or indirect supervisor responsibility for some exempt employees.
8.Direct management responsibility for Pest Control and Sanitation 3rd party partners.
9.Other duties as assigned.
B.S / B.A. Degree in Microbilogy, Biology or related Science degree or related job experience.
3-5 years in-plant experience. Computer skills. Supervisory experience preferred.
Prefer individual with AIB/ASI or some other professional GMP/Sanitation training. Prefer individual has completed Pest control training (i.e. State Pesticide Certification, Purdue Correspondence Course). Effective communicator with training, facilitation and supervisory skills. Deep analytical skills and problem solving. Strategic thinker. Self-motivation and ability to work with people at all levels of the organization. Computer skills to include proficiency with the Microsoft Office Software.
Must be able to work any shift. Some weekend work may be required.
