Position Title: Food Safety Manager
Position Reports To: Retail Operations
Pay Level: 8-9 Management
FLSA Status: Exempt (Salaried)

Position Summary:
Execute the division strategy, action plans, and establishing goals for food safety in alignment with the Customer 1st Business Plan. Coach and train district coordinators in all aspects of food safety. Implement all division food safety training and participate in proactive consumer education. Provide all food safety support for a specific district and assist in other districts. Track department sanitation auditing (FSR), food temperature monitoring, and recall management procedures. Serves as a liaison to the regulatory community and local health departments in maintaining and improving overall department sanitation practices. Role model and demonstrate the company’s core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion and safety of others.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Demonstrate excellence in developing and executing continuous improvement projects that will improve the overall food safety performance of their division, as measured by the Corporate Measuring Food Safety metrics.
  • Audit store processes, observe employee practices, and review compliance of food merchandising programs to ensure that food safety/sanitation policies, practices, and procedures are being followed.
  • Monitor programs related to food safety and sanitation in food preparation departments.
  • Review pest control service reports and provide store operations with data and guidance to develop improvement action plans.
  • Evaluate and recommend food safety measures for new merchandising plans, food production processes, new store designs, and new technologies that may be appropriate in enhancing the safe handling of perishable foods within the store.
  • Serve as an active member of regional committees in the retail food industry and their trade organizations.
  • Proactively develop good working relationships with local and state governmental agencies. This will include having partnerships on educating consumers, serving on local health department committees, and other activities that demonstrate Kroger’s commitment to food safety in the community.
  • Ensure that food safety training programs from Basic Food Safety to the Certified Managers training programs are customized to division specific programs and are up to date. Provide Train the Trainer training to division training departments.
  • Provide consumers access to food safety education materials on a regular basis.
  • Develop communication programs to keep merchandising, operations, and store employees current in food safety/sanitation policies, procedures, metrics, and training.
  • Maintain a food safety web page on the division’s web site, which includes corporate and division policies, best practices, food safety resources, contact lists, etc.
  • Keep key division personnel informed of the latest scientific, technical, and practical developments in food safety and sanitation.
  • Maintain a current Certified Food Safety Professional certification.
  • Continue an aggressive personal development program to broaden the knowledge base and skills necessary to accept greater levels of responsibility within the division.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of food safety and its associated health risks, store sanitation, food safety training, and national food safety regulations.
  • Three to five years experience in food safety.
  • Very proficient skills in presentations, oral, and written communications.
  • Have a current Certified Food Safety Professional (CFSP) certification (or obtain within six months of assuming position).
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to travel independently.

Desired Previous Job Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of retail food operations is desired.
  • Working knowledge of store operations.
  • Working knowledge of food safety and microbiological concepts.
  • Conversant in Food Code and appropriate State Health Regulations.
  • Effective at delivering food safety training programs.
  • Ability to communicate in a manner that keeps external agencies and internal management aware of current status of food safety practices and issues.
  • Proficient in project planning, problem solving, program execution, and dealing with regulatory compliance agencies. Recognized company-wide as an expert in technical field. Typically recognized and respected by industry peers as a leading expert in technical field.
  • Working knowledge of the following computer programs: MS Windows, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer
