Food Technologist – Santa Rosa, CA


Job Description

Position Overview:

Developing new and/or improved products using existing and newly improved ingredients and technologies.



·         Participates in work related trainings, course work, trade shows and seminars as assigned by Department Manager.

·         Evaluates and ensures the accuracy of data collected during plant trials.

·         Evaluates and ensures the accuracy of prototype testing to finalize product specifications and production processing parameters.

·         Modify existing products and processes and developing new ones.

·         Research current consumer markets and latest technologies to develop new product concepts and/or packaging concepts.

·         Continually source scientific and market trends by remaining informed on industry related product innovations.

·         Appropriate selection of raw materials and other ingredients from suppliers in order to reduce raw material costs as well as improve product quality and consistency.

·         Prepare product costing based on raw materials and manufacturing costs to ensure profitable products.

·         Assist Marketing Department in final package label development.

·         Ensure repeatability, consistency, quality, and safety of new and/or improved products.

·         Create and ensure accuracy of all product specification sheets.

·         Excellent ability to articulate technical information in both written and verbal forms.

·         Liaising and cooperating with internal and external colleagues in procurement, sales and marketing, and technical services to reach project goals.

·         Create and ensure accuracy of nutrition facts panels, allergen and ingredient declarations for new and/or existing products though the use of Genesis Nutritional Labeling Software and

·         outside laboratories and/or consultants.

·         Apply broad and diverse knowledge of the food production process.

·         Organizes and provides timely summaries on the progress of projects to Department Manager.

·         Responsible for organizing appropriate internal and external sensory evaluations and/or focus groups as necessary.

·         Assists Department Manager on all final label approvals.


Job Requirements

·         BS in Food Science, Nutritional Science or related field desired

·         A minimum one-year experience working as R&D Technician (or comparable work experience to that of an R&D Technician)

·         And/or a comparable combination of education and experience.

·         Regularly move or life 25 pounds and shall be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

·         In depth knowledge of USDA organic standards as it pertains to ingredient selection and organic foods labeling.

·         Ability to apply nutritional knowledge in the development or refinement of existing products is highly desirable.

·         An in-depth knowledge of GMPs, HACCP.

·         In depth knowledge and experience in the labeling of FDA regulated food products.

·         Excellent math skills—ability to scale ingredients up or down in any given formula (ie. convert grams to kilograms, ounces to pounds, etc), use of percentages/ratios, calculate amount

·         of whole grain, and/or ppm of a specific nutrient or ingredient in a final product.

·         Experience and knowledge using "Bakers Percent".

Other Requirements:

·         Bilingual helpful (English/Spanish).

·         California Class C Drivers License with clean DMV Record.
