Job Description

SUMMARY: Accountable for driving sales through application innovation level work and direct customer interactions. The applications team is responsible for the verification, validation and commercialization activities associated with internally manufactured patented gum products and broad based blend solutions. These activities include preparation of finished good samples, internal and external testing of product for quality parameters, and attendance of customer validation trials. The application food scientist is an integral member of the innovation team supplying key insight into end use application for ingredient innovations. Additionally, the application food scientist proactively creates broad based solutions using existing products, terms and application innovations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: 1. Providing and maintaining a safe, accident-free laboratory environment.

2. Staying abreast of recent scientific findings that pertain to the application of hydrocolloids in food, pharmaceutical, and industrial areas.

3. Maintaining a working knowledge of all phases of customer-based product development to include new ingredients/ raw materials, processing parameters, equipment, and packaging details. 4. Working independently on long term project assignments. Responsible for completing assigned projects in a timely fashion using an appropriate experimental design and reporting status of projects as they progress with a final summary in the company designated data base system.

5. Supervising the assignment, execution, and completion of projects assigned to Lab Technicians as assigned. Responsible for providing guidance to Lab Technicians with respect to career advancement in the form of Catalytic Coaching as assigned.

6. Preparing and/or completing specifications, nutritional information, and MSDS documentation for new and modified gum systems.

7. Maintaining a legible and organized laboratory book of all assigned projects.

8. Handling technical calls from customers and TIC representatives providing written documentation of discussions.

9. Writing technical bulletins on specific end use applications highlighting the use of gums and gum systems.

10. Preparing and presenting information at technical meetings, trade shows, and customer visits.

11. Participating in the ISO documentation and internal audit.

12. Following all company safety rules in performing job duties.

13. Performing other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises R&D lab technicians when assigned. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizationís policies and applicable laws. Supervisory responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing, hiring, training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Uses own initiative and exercises independent judgment. Strong ability to lead a team in a successful manner.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The position requires a minimum of a Bachelorís of Science in Food Science or a related discipline. Work-related experience in product development and supervisory experience preferred. Current working knowledge of analytical and physical testing methodologies as well as knowledge of Broad scoping product development. Familiarity with current finished good processing techniques. Minimum 5 years of experience; 10 preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively using scientific nomenclature to individuals with all levels of education and experience. Ability to present information effectively using oral presentation skills to managers, supervisors, employees, and customers. Ability to critically read, analyze, and interpret all relevant periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations. Be able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures effectively. Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Create experimental designs based on statistical requirements. Additional skills consistent with educational requirement.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to identify and solve practical and technical problems and deal with a variety of technical situations where only limited standards exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished orally or in writing.

SPECIAL SKILLS and ABILITIES: Good time management and multi-tasking ability required. Should be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, and all pertinent R&D software. This position is in regular contact with Field and Inside Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance as well as external customers.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel required: 25% travel required.
