Job Title: Director of Quality Assurance
Reports to: VP of Quality
Location: Edina, MN with travel
FLSA status: Exempt

Position Summary
The Director of Quality Assurance is a member of the SunOpta management team. The Quality Assurance Director provides overall leadership in the development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive Food Safety and Quality Management System applied to both SunOpta Consumer Products Group operations and contract manufacturers. The position is responsible for ensuring SunOpta QA standards, Customer QA requirements and Regulatory requirements are met.

Required Skills of the Director of Quality Assurance:

  • Management Team– actively participates in leadership team activities (team meetings, developing Key Performance indicators, quality resource to team, follow-up on assignments, keep peers informed, involve all levels of organization in problem solving, participate in project development, etc.).
  • Direct Activities of Staff - Work with Staff to coordinate audits of Manufacturing Operation, and inspection, evaluation and testing of product to insure product meets the product specification. * * * Hire, discipline and coach staff.
  • Quality Management - Develop, implement, and administer a comprehensive Quality Management System (continuous improvement focus) to ensure company conformance to internal and external customer quality requirements. Designs, develops implements and administers the Quality Programs and leads the development of quality KPI’s and reporting to Management
  • Customer Complaints- Reviews customer complaints, and supports complaint investigations and response to customer
  • Regulatory – Ensure the QA Manager and facility is meeting regulatory requirements (FDA, USDA, SQF, Military, State, SunOpta, Customer, etc…).
  • Manufacturing Controls – Oversees the maintenance of product standards, approved ingredients and manufacturing controls.
  • New Product Development - Ensures that all details relating to new products are complete prior to scheduling for production.
  • Allergen Program- Ensures the management and efficacy of the allergen program.
  • Document Control- Oversees the development of manufacturing records to insure documentation proving traceability, regulatory compliance and GMP compliance.
  • Raw Materials- Develops raw material and ingredient specifications in compliance with customer fitness for use criteria. Insures that raw materials comply with specifications prior to use.
  • Out-Of-Compliance Material- Ensures the implementation of a Quality Hold Program to isolate and “freeze” non-conforming finished product. Supports investigations of finished product and raw material out-of-compliance occurrences and determines a disposition. Ensures submittal of defective material claims.
  • Record Review- Ensures all processing records pertaining to product production are reviewed in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Product Release- Ensures all product production records are reviewed prior to product release.
  • Spoilage Investigation - Leads all investigations into spoilage events. Rapidly identifies root causes and identifies corrective action plans. Advises Management on actions needed. Provides a written quarterly report on findings to Management.
  • Retention Sample Program- Ensures the maintenance of a Retention Sample Program.
  • Audit- Provide regular internal HACCP System audits (GMP, Sanitation, traceability, etc.) of the facility noting any compliance issues. Provides a written report to Management on findings.
  • Reporting- Provide regular updates and a monthly report of activities (including, but not limited to; on-hold product, customer complaints, weight control, spoilage, defect log).
  • Change Management- Support the formulation and procedural change process
  • Other duties as assigned or required

Required Experience for the Director of Quality Assurance:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field from a 4-year college or university and 4 or more years of progressive senior quality management experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in the dairy industry required for consideration.
