The Dow Chemical Company has an opening for an R&D Technician in Collegeville, PA. Dow Microbial Control (DMC) is focused on providing solutions to microbial control problems in a wide variety of end uses and markets. These uses range from water treatment of large scale water process systems such as oil & gas, cooling water, and pulp & paper applications to preservation of paints, adhesives, metalworking fluids and cosmetics, to disinfection and sterilization of medical devices, food environments, and other hygiene applications. Supporting R&D projects associated with the development of new microbial control technology for new and existing applications.

Evaluation and testing of microbial control technologies using various microbiological techniques as well as molecular methods.

Run microbiological assessments of test samples in accordance with standard microbiological practices using clearly demonstrated aseptic laboratory technique.

The candidate will also assist in the development and use of new microbiological methods and techniques, and identify and implement improvements to existing methods and procedures.

Responsibilities also include management of lab inventories and supplies, including proper storage and maintenance of microorganisms, equipment maintenance, installation and validation of new equipment and methods, generating and maintaining documentation for the safe and productive operation of equipment and methods, analysis of data and results, and documentation of results in databooks and reports.

Must be able to independently manage their daily responsibilities, troubleshoot basic laboratory processes, procedures, and equipment, and implement modifications with minimal supervision.

Maintain a safe and clean laboratory, work safely in an R&D environment, and actively participate in company safety programs.

The position is located in the Dow research center in Spring House, Pennsylvania and will be moving to Collegeville, PA mid-2014


Required Qualifications:

Experience with the following:

media/buffer preparation
microbial culture preparation
determining viable counts
familiarity with common equipment such as single (multi) channel pipettes, autoclave, centrifuge
awareness of biosafety procedures

Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft applications
A self-starter with ability to balance multiple projects on different timelines
Proven ability and passion for working within a highly collaborative environment.
Sets high standards of personal excellence and demonstrates these behaviors in work habits
Strong independent problem solving skills and strong attention to detail
A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis (U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, or Qualifying Asylee/Refugee).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in anaerobic microbiology, including familiarity with anaerobic chambers or glove boxes, is highly desirable.
Experience with molecular biology methods such as PCR and Gel Electrophoresis

Education Requiremnets:
Minimum requirement is an Associate's degree is required.
* B.Sc. degree in a Biological Science, preferably in Microbiology with at least one year of experience in an industrial or institutional R&D environment strongly preferred.
