Job Description: Food Safety Manager

Full time Food Safety Manager, certified SQF Practitioner to develop, administer and verify the SQF Food Safety and Quality systems. This includes overseeing the development and implementation of the SQF systems and compliance programs. The practitioner will also have the authority to take appropriate actions to ensure integrity of the SQF Code systems.

Primary Responsibilities

The Food Safety Manager will be responsible for developing, administering and maintaining applicable Food Safety Programs & Policies; implementation and continuous improvement of food safety focused programs including but not limited to Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), Prerequisite Programs (PRPs), SQF Food Safety and Quality systems.

Including overseeing the development, administration, implementation and verification of the SQF systems; Compliance Programs, Standard Operating Procedures for Safe Quality Food (SQF), and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP).

The position reports directly to the Quality Manager.


  • The position has the authority to observe, review, lead and take initiative/action for food safety activities in site, supplier, and customer activities, with proper notification to senior management of each.
  • The position has the authority to develop, implement and audit programs directly related to quality, food safety, and assigned projects.
  • The position has the authority to manage the food safety monitoring and verification activities performed by personnel in alternate functional areas in conjunction with the respective managers


  • Manage and lead the food safety team. Lead and manage the development of food safety programs. Monitor and track the effectiveness of these programs including standards, training, and quality documentation, and strive for continuous improvements to meet or exceed customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain up to date HACCP flow diagrams, hazard analysis and related monitoring, verification and validation documentation.
  • Manage internal food safety to promote a proactive approach towards food safety.
  • Support the customer complaint team in food safety complaint root cause analysis and preventive action.
  • Lead and Manage Recall/Withdrawal campaigns and Mock Recalls as Recall Coordinator, working with appropriate Recall team members.
  • SQF practitioner; provide direction to meet SQF requirements and responsible for verification and validation of Food Safety System in accordance with SQF code.
  • Facilitate customer, regulatory and 3rd party audits.
  • Lead internal audit program and ensure that documentation and policies are being maintained.
  • Conduct quarterly Food Safety meetings.
  • Identify, write and implement GMPs, Prerequisite Programs, and Food Safety QA testing policies and procedures.
  • Conduct monthly GMP, HACCP and Global Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI)

internal audits, procedures, paperwork and inspections.

  • Coordinate with others within the company to ensure initiatives meet quality, regulatory and food safety standards.
  • Monitor and update of quality documents, procedures, work instructions, forms, raw material specifications, packaging, in-process products and finished products.
  • Keep current on knowledge of all food and feed safety regulations and laws within the assigned region.
  • Participate in Industry associations as it relates to food and feed safety rules and regulations.
  • Travel as needed.

Basic Qualifications: (required)

  • Minimum of 2 years practical experience in Food Safety, Management of Quality Assurance in the food industry, with 2 plus years management or supervisory experience.
  • Experience in Food Quality Assurance to include:
  • Experience with food or food ingredient production
  • Experience with external food safety audits such as (HACCP, GFSI,


  • Knowledge of Global Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI), Safe Quality Food (SQF), SQF Practitioner Certification and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement
  • Ability to affect change through influence leadership
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, organized, detail oriented in record and procedures design and maintenance.
  • Proficient at Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Must have strong critical thinking ability along with analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, coaching and conflict management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Food Technology, Food Science, Food Engineering, Microbiology, Chemistry or a qualified background in food science, or food engineering
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations, FDA, OSHA
