Job Description

Develop, establish and maintain plant food safety programs and controls, including microbiological, sanitation GMPís, and related SSOPís assuring that all aspects of the facilities food safety and sanitation programs are in accordance with accepted GMPís as mandated by USDA and other government agencies and company policy and in accordance with any customer specific requirements.


         Will assist plant QA management with all the applicable training, scheduling, GMP, HACCP, SOP, SSOP, document verification, internal audits, vendor audits, USDA audits, FSA audits and third party audits Ė BRC.

         Effectively monitor and manage plant microbiological, GMP, SOP and sanitary design standards and insure plant compliance

         Maintain all laboratory equipment and order lab supplies, including basic calibration and troubleshooting

         Develop and implement procedures and practices to maintain efficient processing of lab samples

         Supervise, train and develop QA staff assigned to the lab

         Main interface with plant contract sanitation and 3rd shift superintendent

         Accurate and timely reporting of results to plant management for review

         Maintain appropriate laboratory programs and certifications (ISO 17025 Proficiency Testing)

         Maintain lab costs within budgets

         Act as the key contact for the outside labs and lab services

         Utilize SPC and other statistical tools to manage results and improve performance of the plant and lab programs

         Review finished products analysis for accuracy and reasonableness

         Be the main resource to prevent and solve the plantís micro issues

         Fully investigate unusual/unacceptable results

         Maintain/improve monitoring programs as required based on performance, new regulations and/or best practices

         Participate with Corp QA as needed or assigned regarding lab practices, programs and procedures

         Other duties as assigned 

Required Skills

         B.S.  in Food Science, Microbiology or related fields

         Strong interpersonal skills, along with supported verbal and written communication skills

Required Experience

         Direct experience with GFSI certification schemes (SQF, BRC, etc.)

         Knowledge of SPC, HACCP, USDA regulations, GMPís, SOPís, SSOPís, Word, Excel and Power Point.

         3-5 years experience in plant Quality Assurance with Food Safety a benefit
