·         Job Description:

Develop and implement food safety programs for retail establishments (supermarkets) and wholesalers; direct and serve as Editor-in-Chief of FMI’s food safety training development and educational programs; direct food safety and food protection activities for the FMI membership; interact with federal and state regulatory officials; and represent FMI and its members with external constituents.

·         Essential Job Functions:

- Develop and implement food safety programs (including best practices guides, educational materials and training tools) for retail and wholesale food companies.

 

- Develop and implement food safety activities (including conferences, meetings, workshops and web-casts) for retail and wholesale food companies.

 

-  Evaluate needs and prioritize projects so that critical food safety objectives are met.

 

- Develop and implement project plans including tracking time-lines, meeting deadlines, and adjusting priorities to assure final products are consistent with objectives and the FMI strategic plan.

 

- Direct, develop, maintain and/or market FMI food safety programs and projects such as Rapid Recall Exchange, pathogen control research and control programs, SafeMark materials, etc.

 

- Establish and maintain contacts with regulators at federal and state level, academicians, experts and others to resolve questions and issues on behalf of members.

 

- Respond to member inquiries and requests for information.

 

- Research information, including regulations, policies, model Food Code interpretations and published data to gather information for members.

 

- Serve as the coordinator and primary contact for FMI’s Food Protection Committee, responding to member requests for information, guidance and assistance in all matters related to food safety and defense.

 

- Recruit new members for the Committee; coordinate the scheduling and planning of all committee events, conduct conference calls/Webinars as needed, and follow-up on action items.

 

- Responsible for managing all FMI activities related to the Conference for Food Protection, FDA Food Code, and related state and federal issues.

 

- Review and analyze Food Code recommendations as they impact on retail members.

 

- Identify issues for the Conference of Food Protection; prepare documentation for councils and in support of member positions. Serve on CFP committees and Board as needed.

 

- Direct and serve as the Editor-in-Chief of the SafeMark training and certification program including training materials offered, review of training materials, delivery of training courses and marketing the program to retailers. Same as above for other food safety training programs as needed.

 

- Primary liaison responsible for coordinating SafeMark initiatives with authors and key partners: National Registry test provider, on-line training course provider (LearnSomething), fulfillment center (Tasco), etc.

 

- Represent FMI and Food Safety Programs with internal and external constituents.

 

- Collaborate with regulatory officials, academia, contractors and others external to FMI to enhance food safety and public health programs.

 

- Internally, participate on various teams to develop strategies and programs for food retailers and wholesalers; work with other divisions/programs to develop materials for Food Safety Programs.

 

- Review and comment on legislation, regulations, and state codes and cooperate with state and federal entities on the interpretation, implementation and modification of regulations and standards pertaining to food safety.

 

- Responsible for managing all aspect of the SafeMark annual budget and financial performance.

 

- Coordinate and conduct member visits to review and discuss retail practices and current events in food safety. Assist in the recruitment of new members.

·         Physical Requirements:

Normal office environment requiring use of typical business equipment (e.g., computer, telephone, fax, copier, security system). Travel 25-35% of time.

·         Education, Skills and Experience:

- College degree in a field related to food safety or science; or equivalent work experience.

 

- 7 years professional work experience with at least 5 years directly related to food safety and/or food science.

 

- 1 year prior supervisory experience.

 

- Knowledge of federal and state food regulatory authorities and agencies.

 

- Knowledge of federal and state food regulations.

 

- Knowledge of and/or experience in food retail/wholesale industry.

 

- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office products and database software.

 

- General knowledge of publishing, including processes and software (Quark, FrameMaker, etc.) used in publishing environment.

 

- Communication and writing skills, strong customer service and team orientation.

 

- Knowledge and experience using various social networking mediums.

 

- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

- Interpersonal skills.
