The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a multi-disciplinary
effort to understand the role of filth flies in movement of human pathogens
to unprocessed fresh produce. This is part of a Food Safety project within
the purview of the National Institute for Microbial Forensics & Food and
Agricultural Biosecurity (NIMFFAB) at Oklahoma State University.
Responsibilities will include: collection and preparation of fly and
environmental samples from animal habitation areas and leafy green production
areas; detection of enteric bacteria from samples using enrichment
techniques, serological methods, and PCR-based detection; and create
bacterial profiles using T-RFLP and other methods. Research will focus on
analyzing bacterial profiles obtained from flies and environmental samples to
determine the origin of filth flies captured in leafy greens. The successful
candidate will also be expected to assist graduate students, publish research
results, and interact with other researchers within NIMFFAB. This OAES funded
position is available May 15, 2009 in the laboratory of Dr. Astri Wayadande,
