The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a multi-disciplinary effort to understand the role of filth flies in movement of human pathogens to unprocessed fresh produce. This is part of a Food Safety project within the purview of the National Institute for Microbial Forensics & Food and Agricultural Biosecurity (NIMFFAB) at Oklahoma State University. Responsibilities will include: collection and preparation of fly and environmental samples from animal habitation areas and leafy green production areas; detection of enteric bacteria from samples using enrichment techniques, serological methods, and PCR-based detection; and create bacterial profiles using T-RFLP and other methods. Research will focus on analyzing bacterial profiles obtained from flies and environmental samples to determine the origin of filth flies captured in leafy greens. The successful candidate will also be expected to assist graduate students, publish research results, and interact with other researchers within NIMFFAB.
