JOB TITLE: Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) –Food Safety (Bilingual Spanish/English)

This position works in the BCPH Consumer Protection Program and performs a variety of duties and responsibilities to help prevent the spread of disease, mitigate health risks, and ensure compliance with all rules and regulations in the area of food safety.

SALARY RANGE (NOTE: new employees typically start at or near entry level):
EHS I: $3,505-$5,047 per month
EHS II: $4,157-$5,986 per month


OFFICE LOCATION: Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) Environmental Health Division, 3450 Broadway, Boulder, CO

Examples of Duties:

• Performs retail food establishment inspections in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and ordinances.
• Issues retail food licenses/permits.
• Works with the retail food industry and the public to reduce environmental health-related food safety risks.
• Develops and performs bilingual (English and Spanish) educational classes and presentations to clients, industry, and the public.
• Develops bilingual (English and Spanish) educational and training materials and outreach strategies for target groups in the area of food safety.
• Performs investigations of public complaints related to food safety.
• Performs epidemiological investigations related to foodborne illness.
• Fosters teamwork and open communication among staff; participates in team-building activities.
• Performs other duties, as assigned

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental health, public health, or related field.

Experience: The classification of EHS I or II is dependent upon years of experience and ability to perform technical tasks in investigation of environmental health conditions:
• EHS I: No previous experience is required.
• EHS II: A minimum of two years of experience performing technical tasks in investigation of environmental health conditions is required.
Additional related education may apply toward required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of educational and community outreach strategies.
• Ability to understand, interpret, and apply statutes and regulations pertaining to food safety.
• Ability to effectively present educational classes.
• Ability to use standard computer software, including Microsoft Office programs; GIS experience is preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, clients, outside agencies, and the public.
• Ability to perform as an effective team player.

Special Requirements:
• Must have access to reliable transportation, readily available for business use.
• Ability to speak and write fluent English and Spanish; bicultural person is preferred.
