POSITION SUMMARY:
This Food Technologist role is responsible for formulating new products, completing product maintenance, product cost reduction, product improvements and to integrate products into production. This is accomplished by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate employees.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand project objectives and organize product development tasks to meet the given timelines for the objective or purpose of approved projects utilizing the information supplied by Marketing and Sales and any other pertinent input.
  • Maintain current product line equivalence to the national brand and/or other targeted product line. Submit any product change proposals to the department head for final decisions once products have passed all necessary internal sensory panels.
  • Evaluate new and/or alternate ingredient suppliers for additional sourcing. Review and evaluate proposals submitted to determine if these new ingredient sources meet the current product needs and financial limitations.
  • Develop and/or maintain a good collaborative working relationship with ingredient suppliers to assist in the creation of new or revised ingredients for the development or cost savings of products.
  • Provide technical assistance to the sales department, quality control and all production departments either at the main facility or at various off site locations as requested.
  • Develop correct nutritional information, make up directions, net weight claims and verify proper label claims for your product groups maintaining up to date Product Information Bulletins (PIBs).
  • Develop technical product specifications and ingredient specifications as relate to your area of products.
  • Access up to date ingredient documentation (Kosher, organic, allergen, etc.) for ingredients related to your product group and update PIBs as necessary, circulating to those who need to know.
  • Work with Engineering and Production in the integration or optimization of the manufacturing of products within the product groups you are responsible for.
  • Watch for new product trends and product releases that may be of interest and/or possible line extensions for the business. Present these innovative products and ideas to the department head.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or related degree
  • 5 years’ experience in related food industry preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in dry or powdered food products or beverages, e.g. instant hot cocoas, sugared drink mixes, sugar-free/NSA type mixes, cappuccino blends.
  • Matching & duplication experience required.
  • Adept at sensory evaluation & taste panels.
  • Well rated for taste acuity.
  • Excellent investigatory skills & problem-solving skills
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Able to create specifications for Raw Ingredients, Internal Blends, Finished Products and Manufacturing Procedures.
  • A multi-tasker; able to work on several projects at the same time, with short turnaround times.
  • Experienced in ingredient & flavor house networking.
  • Alternative ingredient and/or cost reduction experience preferred.
  • Able to work with multiple departments in the creation and manufacturing of new and/or revised products.
  • Experienced in new product development from concepts supplied by Marketing.
  • Able to make occasional sales calls with sales staff.
  • Able to work with outside resources for manufacturing and/or scale up on new or existing products.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages 1 to 2 subordinates. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of these employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or listen. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit; use hands to handle documents or feel and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
