Position Description

Supplier Food Safety Managers oversee food safety issues related to specific types of suppliers including private brand, national brand, importers, and small or local food suppliers. This includes establishing processes, policies, and specifications to ensure that the company only does business with suppliers that meet our food safety standards. This position is ultimately responsible for approving or disapproving the types of foods and food suppliers they are assigned to oversee by reviewing suppliers practices and results of third party audits, certifications, and product test results. This position is also responsible for investigating all alleged foodborne illnesses, foreign objects in food, food allergic reactions, and alleged food tampering events. Supplier Food Safety Managers must proactively stay abreast of current and emerging food safety issues and regulations related to the foods/suppliers they oversee and advise the company of needed risk management actions. In this role, day to day challenges are a frequent occurrence, which can range from, but not limited to 1) receiving reports of alleged illnesses and having to determine if they are legitimately related to the suspect food, 2) reports of product tampering and foreign objects in food and advising of product disposition, 3) assisting in collecting information for media inquiries regarding alleged illnesses/injuries or regulatory findings 4) assisting with evaluation of regulatory inquiries related to food suppliers, and 5) receiving reports of poor audit or test results and advising on course of action

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of a B.S. in Food Microbiology, Food Science, or related field is required. Beneficial Registrations or Certifications include: Registered Microbiologist, Certified Food safety Professional, or related registration or certification. The ideal candidate has a proven track record as a technical subject matter expert in food safety with at least 5 years of experience in a related role in food retail, food service,or food manufacturing sector. Experience in a third party consulting firm or regulatory agency is also valid. He or she must have an in depth knowledge of HACCP, food safety specifications, food processing, emerging foodborne pathogens and state of the art control strategies. They must have a minimum of Bachelors degree in Food Microbiology, Food Science or related field with a graduate degree being desired. This person must have a good business acumen, high energy level, and effective communication and influence skills. He or she must be highly organized, analytical, and an excellent problem solver. This person must be a collaborator with experience in interacting with company buyers and regulatory officials.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in Food Microbiology, Food Science, or related field is highly desired, but not required.
