Job Description

We are seeking candidates for a Food Safety Risk Analyst / Risk Assessment Modeler with at least 2-5 years of experience that possess a strong background in the development and use of quantitative risk assessment methods and models, particularly those relevant to food safety. The successful candidate will help to develop methodologies and models used by federal and international agencies in evaluating risks to public health associated with contaminated food including, for example, ready-to-eat produce and seafood. Work activities will involve all aspects of model development, from creating the conceptual approach, through coding, implementation, and testing of software. This work will support the development of software and database systems that will be used, ultimately, to develop strategies to optimize the reduction of public health risks associated with exposure to contaminated food. In addition to ranking and identifying the highest priority risks, the candidate will be responsible for helping to develop cutting edge methodologies to optimize resource allocation decisions. For example, the techniques that are developed for our clients will support a transparent, science-based analytical framework for decision making that can be used to test assumptions, address uncertainties, and identify optimum strategies for allocating resources to research, risk communication, regulatory intervention, etc. The candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary team from the conceptual design, through the methodology development, the software/data management system design, the data development and analysis, and the software testing for various “scenarios” to test the model’s logic. Candidate must be willing to be based in RTI’s Washington DC office.

The candidate will be working with a microbiologists, engineers, programmers, database specialists, risk assessors, and food safety specialists on a variety of projects for domestic and international clients. In addition to collaborating across multiple disciplines, the candidate will have significant opportunities to grow into technical and project leadership roles, working closely with senior technical staff to develop new skills. We offer a workplace that provides the mentoring necessary for the candidate to establish a clear career path and develop the necessary skills to achieve real professional growth. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to publications and attend scientific conferences to present our work.
