Position Title: Analytical Technologist

Reports To:  Analytical Science Manager

Purpose of Role:


Performs a wide variety of sophisticated analytical measurements and collaborates on design/development of analytical methods/experimental protocol as required for product development, manufacturing, regulatory or platform research.  Responsible for internal lab operational programs including lab safety, chemical hygiene and site laboratory support.  Assures and updates the appropriate documentation for such programs.  This position also provides analytical technical support to SBU and/or Global Platform projects.


Principal Accountabilities:


        Technical expertise in the use and application of complex analytical instrumentation to support food product development and processing.  Specific instrumentation to include but not limited to preparative and analytical chromatography, optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and materials characterization tools (DSC, TGA, DMA, TMA, Texture analyzers).


        Administration of laboratory operational programs including all new lab safety initiatives, safety training, chemical hygiene plan, chemical inventories, hazardous waste, and overall lab organization/cleanliness.


        Functions as primary laboratory interface to key external groups including local site safety and all site laboratories.


        Coordinates of a co-op or similar program within the analytical laboratory providing university outreach along with a vital technical resource for the laboratory.


        Interfaces with laboratory clients to report data, clarify results interpretation contribute to experimental designs, and recommend future direction.  Frequently resolves inconsistent or atypical results in an independent manner or with minimal supervisor assistance.  May function as an interface to factory labs coordinating analytical methods and proficiency studies for these sites.


        Demonstrated knowledge and lab skills to critically read, interpret and perform documented analytical procedures.  Implements appropriate method modifications as required.


        Collaborates with Analytical Scientist(s) in the development and validation of new analytical methods.  Participates in the method development process.


        Recommends, designs and conducts additional laboratory procedures (analytical / standard preparation / sample preparation / shelf life protocol) depending on project demands.


        Evaluates ongoing project laboratory needs on a daily basis.  Schedules time

(personal and/or temporary/co-op) and general-use lab equipment to meet project timelines.  Recommends new equipment as needed.  Planning horizon is typically less than 2 years.


        Maintains documentation of analytical results in a company issued notebook and a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).


        Maintains laboratory equipment and necessary supplies (e.g. instrumentation, chemicals, solvents, glassware).

Key Functional Skills/Knowledge


        An understanding of the key scientific principles associated with food systems.

        In conjunction with a general knowledge of food science and chemistry, in-depth knowledge of a "broad base" of analytical techniques including separation sciences required to assure the quality of chemical measurements.

        Demonstrated knowledge and experience in laboratory safety, chemicals management and chemical hygiene plans.

        Knowledge of statistical methods including sampling plans and confidence intervals

        Excellent practical laboratory skills.  Ability to troubleshoot and maintain complex analytical instrumentation.

        Demonstrated experience and skill in the use of the following:  Computers, Spreadsheet software (MS Excel preferred), Data Acquisition software (i.e. HP Chemstation), and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

        Excellent organizational skills to adapt to fluctuating workloads while maintaining appropriate attention to detail.

        Demonstrated ability to follow established laboratory safety procedures, to maintain accurate records, and to clearly and accurately read and write and transcribe data and analytical chemistry literature.

        Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.

        Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as a member of a team.

Key Experiences


        Demonstrated record of success in the chemical and physical characterization of food systems.

        Demonstrated expertise in the use and troubleshooting of a wide variety of complex analytical instrumentation including spectroscopic, chromatographic and rheological tools.

        5 or more years experience in a technical field within the food or related industry



Desired Education:


        Education -B.S. (M.S. or Ph.D Preferred) degree in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or related field (e.g., Food Science, Biology,) is required.

        Assures the quality of analytical results identifying atypical data or changes in quality of analytical data.

        Ensures an organized, safe and efficient operating environment within the analytical laboratory.

        Assures laboratory instrumentation is appropriately maintained.

        Contributes to internal laboratory QC through the use and continuous monitoring of secondary standards.

        Critically evaluates information from experiments, approves results within LIMS and presents findings to clients and/or supervisor.

        Contributes to experimental designs or project-driven analytical protocol.



        Changes to laboratory operations resulting in improved quality, safety or efficiency.

        New analytical approaches/procedures as necessary to adapt to changing sample requirements.

        Changes in experimental designs / protocol based upon expertise in analytical instrumentation and data collection processes.
