JOB SUMMARY

 

The function of this job is to perform professional analytical and microbiological testing of food products, ingredients, and environmentals.  The position entails responsibility for application and evaluation of approved microbiological techniques and methodologies used in analytical testing of food products/environmentals.  The position has the authority to act as the laboratory Lead Microbiologist.  This authority and its scope are based on the technical knowledge of the individual.  The Lead Microbiologist will have frequent contact with laboratory customer base when needed as well as perform frequent review and interpretation of laboratory results.  The position works closely with Laboratory Management, the Process Supervisor, and Technical Supervisor and in the daily functions associated with the laboratory.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

·         Apply aseptic/microbiological techniques in daily workload; coordinate sample collection, transport, and receiving

·         Accurately perform and read test results and notify Laboratory Manager of deviations

·         Supervise training of new and current laboratory personnel in laboratory procedures and protocols as assigned

·         Required to present complex scientific information in a clear concise format understood by a variety of audiences

·         Interpret a wide variety of research methods for different food industry matrixes to develop projects for customers

·         Excellent customer service skills and the ability to understand and resolve scientific issues and answer questions

·         Compile data in various analytical formats

·         Interpret data and present findings with appropriate documentation, reference, and supporting material to the food industry

·         Ability to write scientific/technical proposals, reports and presentations

·         Maintain a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food industry issues and trends

·         Identify critical needs for special projects requested by customers

·          Supervise special projects as assigned to include training of technicians on protocols and research assignments

·         Assist with the development and implementation of laboratory services and responsiveness to customer needs, ensuring customer satisfaction while achieving desired business results of revenue and operating margins

·         Travel is required and at the discretion of management

·         Perform other duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

·         BS degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Technology, or related field or; Graduate degree in Microbiology

·         Two years experience in an analytical testing laboratory

·         Three or more years experience in a commercial food-testing laboratory preferred

·         Working knowledge of aseptic sampling technique, automated lab equipment, and acceptable methods and procedures

·         Familiarity with GMP , OSHA guidelines, FDA, BAM, APHA, and Compendium methods and procedure

·         Broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of a food testing laboratory

·         Research abilities to find information to support project objectives from a variety of sources in the food science community

·         Interpersonal abilities to network with the scientific community to expand the resources of the company

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills for all scientific services related to customer requests, report writing, and presentations

·         Proficiency in Word, Excel, Access and other databases

·         Or equivalent combination of education and experience
