Food Safety Manager – FreshDirect

FreshDirect is a $300 mil private held company
that has revolutionized grocery shopping by offering customers fresher direct
from the farm products at everyday low prices, and deliver right to their
homes or offices. Despite the recession in 2009, FreshDirect’s
sales grew 9% in 2009, and 22% in 2010. Over 600,000 customers in NYC 5
boroughs rely on FreshDirect for their fresh food
and brand-name grocery staples. Starting in 2010, FreshDirect
has begun its expansion beyond NYC, into New Jersey, Westchester Country-NY,
and Fairfield County- CT.
Freshdirect is actively seeking a Food Safety
Manager in the NYC area that will be responsible for ensuring the
development, compliance, and certification of HACCP and other food safety
programs.
Responsibilities
will include:
- Directing, planning, and
implementing traceability testing and monitoring.
- Responsible for vendor
management related to food safety.
- Ensures the facility meets all
required food safety laws, regulations, and corporate policies.
- Responsible for the microbial
program compliance for the facility. Also, responsible for continued
development and continuous improvement of such programs.
- May include environmental
responsibilities.
- Responsible for food safety
accountability for all hours of operation.
- Responsible for allergen
program management for the facility.
- The Food Safety Manager ensures
regulatory and company policy compliance, formulates plant strategies,
tactics and improvement initiatives to prevent food safety liability
costs, and lessen risk.
- Accountable for HACCP &
food safety training for the facility to ensure compliance and execution
of required programs.
- Ensure adherence to all
standard work processes, including the Production Sanitation processes.
- Responsible for compliance with
all regulations. Food Safety – plant in proper sanitary condition at all
times, including allergen control, pest control, guidelines followed.
- Responsible for directing,
planning, and implementing shelf life testing and monitoring. Compliance
with food safety policies and procedures.
- Responsible for supporting the
execution of relevant projects within assigned area / shift.
- Responsible for supporting
talent management process for hourly employees. Ensure Diversity and
Inclusion meets / exceeds corporate standards. Proactively engage in the
development and training of hourly labor and support such plans
developed by plant leadership.
- Maintain understanding of
processes and functional interdependencies. Recognize and escalate, as
needed, those issues identified as risks to, or opportunities to improve,
plant performance.
- Adhere to and administer
company policies and procedures.
- Serves as subject matter expert
(SME) to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local,
food safety regulations. Maintains positive contacts with agency representatives
to establish relationships and to assist with compliance issues and
questions.
- Manages strategic external
relationships with professional, regulatory, and community organizations
to provide a safe food environment and to strengthen our standing in the
communities that are served.
- Must be physically capable of
lots of walking, climbing, squatting etc. to complete job duties.
- Incumbent must be able to work
within timelines and in pressure situations.
- Public contact required with
numerous vendors, trainers, etc.
- Communicates with Operation and
Business Managers the effectiveness of the food safety program and to
address regulatory and compliance issues.
Position Requirements:
- BA degree in food science,
microbiology, or equivalent.
- Five (5) to seven (7) years experience in quality & food safety is
required.
Candidate minimum qualifications:
- Previous HACCP certification
program design and implementation is required.
- Thorough technical knowledge of
quality & food safety is required.
- Strong written & verbal
communication skills, analytical ability, leadership strengths and
ability to work effectively with a team are required.
- Computer software skills to
include Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
Candidate preferred qualifications:
- Food processing and packaging
is desired.
- Experience in managing
processes is preferred.
- Prior GMP experience
- Understanding of SSOP’s
Working Conditions:
- Work environment includes
plant, warehouse, production and non-production areas and plant grounds.
- This position may require
approximately 5% travel and work/maintenance coverage beyond the normal
hours, shift, and on weekends/holidays.
