Research
and Development Technologist
Report to:
Director of Research and Development
Location:
Ferndale, WA
Type: Salary
SUMMARY
The R&D
Technologist is responsible for developing new products for Dietary
Supplement from bench top through scale up and production. The individual in
this position will need to work effectively both independently and as a team
member. This position is responsible for formula and process development and
improvements, as well as product technical support to all departments.
Product line will be powders, capsules, liquids, gelatins and emulsions.
PRIMARY
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Bench top Product development:
- Formulate new products for
Branded, Private Label, and International.
- Plan, execute, and document
necessary analytical, stability, and sensory testing
- Source and qualify new raw
materials
- Formulate improved products:
improved sensory, functionality or cost
- Coordinate with outside labs
for analytical testing
- Scale-Up:
- Coordinate scheduling,
purchasing, testing, and follow up for pilots
- Develop and maintain product
transfer protocols ensuring smooth scale-up
- Work with QA and Purchasing to
ensure that appropriate procedures and specifications are in place for
new products/processes
- Source, qualify, and recommend
appropriate production equipment
- Technical Support:
- Assist Operations in reducing
costs of new product processes, reducing process times and improving
yields.
- Provide nutrition labeling
guidance
- Support sales, marketing,
customer service with technical expertise
- Conduct
literature/patent/market research when required
- Other Duties:
- This position may involve
other duties related to product development as required, including, but
not limited to: formula costing, training, writing progress reports,
continuous improvement, and administrative functions.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE
AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Strong communication skills,
both written and verbal. Ability to professionally represent Barlean’s to outside vendors.
- Must have basic understanding
with food processing and food chemistry
- Familiar with label reviewing
process based on CFR
- Experienced in Medical Foods is
a bonus
- Familiarity with FDA Dietary
Supplement codes and regulation
- Experienced in working as a
part of a team
- Proficient in Genesis,
Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Skilled in effectively managing
multiple projects
- Ability to work independently,
given clear objectives and outcomes.
- Ability to adapt to changes and
new situations as opportunities for learning and growth
- Ability to collect, organize, synthesize and analyze data; summarize
findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data
sources.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull
up to 50 pounds unassisted
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel,
and climb stairs
EDUCATION
AND EXPERIENCE
BS in Food
Science or related scientific discipline required. 2 years of R&D experience
in a related industry required.

WORKING
CONDITIONS
Working
conditions are normal for a mixed office/manufacturing environment. Work may
require occasional overnight travel to trade shows or other events.
