Sargento Foods Inc. in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin is looking for a Senior Food Scientist to join our progressivly growing company.

This Senior Food Scientist position will be responsible for developing and scaling up new products. The Senior Food Scientist relates to a wide range of technical skills and many non-technical company functions. Applies scientific principles to develop new products. As a fully competent food scientist in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of the assignments, plans and conducts work requiring a mastery of specialized techniques or ingenuity in selecting and evaluating approaches to unforeseen or novel problems. May be asked to lead technically complex and multi-function project teams.

In addition, the following skills and experience are highly desired:
Experience in the Food Service industry is strongly preferred, including working directly with Food Service customers and culinary staffs.
Creative skills in the area of battered and breaded frozen appetizers, including knowledge of batter and breading systems and the subsequent frying and baking of products preferred.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player who can multi-task and work under urgent timelines.
Must be able to work cross-functionally and make decisions with little or no direction from supervisors.
Candidates should be detail-oriented with the ability to thoroughly document test results, summaries and observations.
Experience in Food Show demonstrations is a plus, but not required.

Applies an analytical approach to the solution of a wide variety of problems and assimilates the details and significance of various scientific analyses, procedures, and tests for new to Sargento ambiguous projects.

Identifies, evaluates and develops potential new business development opportunities.

Consistently creates new to Sargento food technology applications.

Demonstrates initiative, creativity and thoroughness in the execution of complex projects.

Defines and helps teach technical scope of product development projects.

Plans and conducts independent product development projects and participates in the development of project objectives.

May lead cross-functional teams charged with the development of new business opportunities. Develops strong cross-functional relationships towards the end of contributing to and influencing decsions.


Contributes to the development of project strategies and recommends technical direction to management.


Evaluates technical trends in their specific areas of expertise or assignment, makes recommendations for process or product improvements, and identifies opportunities for new or improved processes or products.

Conducts or supervises the testing of new products in bench top labs, the development of specific processing methods in laboratory pilot lab, and scaling products up in manufacturing facilities.

Creates and maintains written technical documentation and product and process specifications.

Utilizes or directs internal (manufacturing, engineering, marketing, quality systems, procurement) and external (suppliers, consultants) functional experts to resolve issues.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a combination of education and experience as follows:
Bachelor degree (B.S.) in Food Science, or a related field plus a minimum of six years of product development experience.
Master degree (M. S.) plus three years of product development.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Strong computer skills are necessary for this position, including word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software, SAP. Internet, and e-mail. Knowledge of most office equipment.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

TRAVEL
Some overnight travel is required.
