Job Purpose

 

The Research Manager-Sensory & Consumer Science provides leadership and expertise to effectively design and conduct the innovative sensory and consumer test protocols and analyze the research data supporting long- and short-term business strategy. Recommendations are to be formulated by data analysis and will be used to support projects and mitigate risks identified in new or existing product/packaging opportunities in the Americas Region in alignment with global Research, Development and Quality group guidelines. 

 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Develop and implement sensory and consumer studies that provide guidance to R&D for the design and optimization of products/packages in the Americas.
  • Apply best-in-class sensory & consumer methodologies to help develop superior products in accordance with group sensory guidelines and local standards.
  • Ensure the quality of our products through monitoring sensory characteristics of our brands at all manufacturing sites in alignment with defined specifications.
  • Develop and apply new methodologies of Sensory & Consumer Science in the Americas.
  • Manage in autonomy Sensory & Consumer studies in the Americas, concerning products under development or already in the market, in order to assess consumer preference and sensory attributes.
  • Evolve the local sensory practice, supporting continuous improvement on new ingredients/technologies for effective development, cost optimization, quality improvement or processing efficiencies in alignment with local desired financial targets.
  • Analyze and interpret sensory and consumer data and report on findings in order to leverage value added consumer insights, in coordination with top class Sensory & Consumer Agencies.
  • Apply human senses and statistical models to describe and quantify the sensory differences between products and ingredients and to optimize products for consumer acceptance.
  • Apply project management principles to execute multiple project work and ensure development activities are aligned with timelines.
  • Provide expertise on sensory evaluation to Barilla Americaís teams, collaborating with Market Research in order to improve consumer understanding.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

 

  • Bachelorís degree in Food or Sensory Science or related field OR Behavioral or Social Science fields; Masterís degree or PhD preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in or with a food manufacturing company (agency, research center, etc.)
  • Minimum of 5 years of identifying food sensory methods, and executing sensory and consumer research
  • Experience in data analysis with actionable business results presented to the business
  • Proven experience leading a project and motivating a team to deliver business results on time and within budget
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience writing technical papers
  • Strong attention to detail, organized self-starter/motivated and able to work autonomously
  • Proficient in MS Office; experience in SAS and/or SPSS preferred
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15% of the time
