JOB SUMMARY:

Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

The incumbent performs research in the Processed Foods Research Unit in Albany, CA. The mission of the unit is to enhance the marketability and healthfulness of agricultural commodities and processed products.  Cereal grains, legumes, and fruits and vegetables are the focus of this research.  Both fundamental and applied research approaches are to be used to solve problems and develop new value-added products which will benefit the consumer, producer, economy and environment.  Fundamental food properties, nutritional attributes, and consumer preferences are important considerations.

Major Duties: 
The incumbent will actively participate in a research project that investigates food processing effects on the allergenicity of food allergens. Under the direction of a Lead Scientist, the incumbent performs the following duties:

·         Conducts and reports original research for understanding the allergenicity of food allergens.

·         Treats tree nuts, milk, fruits, and peanuts with extrusion, jet cooking, ultraviolet, pulsed electric field, and other food processing procedures.

·         Work on cloning, expressing, and purifying recombinant tree nut and milk allergens and utilizes these purified allergens to investigate the effects of food processing on the structural, biochemical, and immunological properties of these allergens.

·         Analyzes and summarizes experimental results.

·         Publishes research data on characterizing food allergens and on developments of methods to assess and improve food processing effects on food allergens.

Your education and experience will be evaluated against all qualification requirements (basic and any additional requirements) listed below.

Basic Requirements:

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s degree or higher degree that included a major field of study in food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science. The course work must have been comprised of at least 30 semester hours in the biological and physical sciences, and included at least 20 semester hours in food technology and closely related subjects, or 20 semester hours in subjects that can be applied directly to food technology OR combination of education and experience – courses equivalent to a major, including the course work specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Requirements
Master’s or equivalent graduate degree OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

 

Specialized Experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are: 

1. Knowledge of applying food processing technologies to the treatment of tree nuts and fruits.
2. Skill in obtaining and statistically analyzing data using a personal computer and software packages such as SAS and SigmaStat.
3. Skill in developing analytical and preparative chromatographic methods.

4. Ability to interpret complex experimental results and writing manuscript draft.
