The Principal Scientist, Color Science and Applications develops short and long term programs to address the identification, implementation, and application of suitable traditional and novel natural alternatives to artificial colors in gum and confectionary products.  The incumbent will be fully engaged and provide technical guidance and support to Innovation product development projects/team to ensure high quality, sustainable, consumer acceptable natural color solutions are incorporated in product design goals.  In addition to developing and executing programs to mitigate risk and transition into suitable color alternatives, the role has the opportunity to enable business growth in light of the W10 aspiration by developing programs to increase core competency in color science and applications, support the development of our technical community in this area, collaborate with counterparts in the broader Mars organization and build long term relationships with suppliers and universities to strengthen Wrigley global position in gum and confections.   Long term opportunities for this role include the development, in conjunction with Procurement, of a color core supplier program.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

·         Provide technical guidance and support to internal research and development teams. As part of Wrigley Color Project Steering Team, develop color strategy to identify and implement natural color alternatives to the use of artificial colors  Increases core competency and understanding of color applications and drivers associated with consumer benefits, etc.

·         Develop and implement short & long term color applied research programs, internally and externally to accomplish color development objectives

·         Establish strong relationship with Color suppliers and Universities to strengthen our understanding and applications for color globally.

·         Collaborate with other Mars segment color applications counterparts to leverage cross functional expertise and develop mutually beneficial programs as appropriate.

·         Keep abreast of key developments in color research and applications through literature reviews and meeting attendance; monitor and track new research and developments in key product benefit areas and communicate information internally to Wrigley stakeholders.

Qualifications

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

·         B.S. food science, food engineering, chemistry, biochemistry.   Graduate level education (M.S., Ph.D.) or experience in color applications is preferred.

·         5-10 years experience in product development and/or technology development and 3+ years experience leading and/or working on product development teams focused on color development and application to food or other consumer products 

·         Chemistry of Color Materials, including natural colors.

·         Gum & Confectionary formulation.

·         Encapsulation.

·         Sensory and Consumer Insights tools and techniques

·         Color applications, including experience with natural colors.

·         Encapsulation technology.

·         Consumer Insights methodology and data interpretation.

·         Leveraging business tools in building a research program (e.g. IP strategy, main parameters of value, removing barriers to creativity, brand equity, and consumer behavior).

·         Collaborative mind set and good team skills for internal and external interaction.

·         Budget planning

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·         Build effective teams and Manage with vision & purpose
