SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the
development of new, innovative products, from concept to final production
that meets the customer needs as well as accomplishes the objective of
profitability and efficiency. Activities include product development,
small scale pilot plant testing, scale-up production at a USDA inspected
and/or non-USDA research facility and finally involvement with full scale
production at a processing plant. Additional responsibilities include
searching and evaluating new raw materials, creating new pet foods and pet
treats, researching nutritional, flavor and texture interactions among
ingredients and process conditions, integrating different technologies for
better product performances.
Activities also involve interaction with customers and ingredient
suppliers, as well as various departments including Engineering,
Production, Accounting, and Sales/Marketing. The Senior Food Technologist
is also expected to study existing resources and processes to identify cost
reductions and quality improvement opportunities, and make periodic
recommendations to management through reports, meetings, and
presentations.
Other duties may include reviewing incoming project requests and
prioritizing/assigning to appropriate technicians, and supporting other
special projects as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Preferred BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Food/Meat Science with
study emphasis in pet food nutrition, formulation, protein chemistry,
and/or meat protein based application.
Experience: Minimum 5 years work experience in Research and
Development pertaining to pet foods while with Tyson or previous similar
experience with another company. Work experience in a related area (QA,
Lab, R &D non-protein, etc.) will be considered and receive some
value. Research done while completing an MS or Ph.D. may be counted as
part of this requirement.
Computer Skills: Requires computer skills. For example, generating
business letters, spreadsheets, and creating simple queries. May require
knowledge of Tyson Business Computer System.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication
skills.
Travel: 12 or more trips per year.
Experience with Thermal Extrusion Technology
with Dehydration and Retort of protein products.
