Senior Product Development Food Scientist - Allegan, MI
Perrigo is currently seeking a Senior Product Development Food Scientist for our newly acquired division, PBM Nutritionals. Our facility in northern Vermont is the only ISO 9001:2000-certified, infant formula-manufacturing facility in the United States. Additionally we are the only baby formula company that adheres to both FDA infant formula guidelines and a stringent set of quality-assurance regulations set by the International Organization for Standardization. We market and distributes the infant and toddler formula products to more than 20,000 retail locations throughout the world. We are a leader in specialty infant formulas, including the first organic formula containing the lipids DHA and ARA, and a partially hydrolyzed formula for babies experiencing fussiness or gas.
This position will be located at our Georgia Vermont facility. This position will be responsible for the developing and project management of new food and nutritional products from initial concept, literature and patent searches, to prototype development, pilot studies and commercial launch in a dynamic high paced environment. Projects may include nutritionals, foods and nutraceuticals. It involves experimental design, ingredient evaluations, troubleshooting, investigations and technical assistance to 3rd party manufacturers.
The Senior Scientist will develop documentation and perform trials for the validation of new products and processes. Products include natural, organic, and conventional infant, toddler, and adult Nutritionals; dairy, soy, and fruit based nutraceuticals, foods and dietary supplements; in liquid and powder forms produced by various manufacturing processes including dry mixing, extrusion, freeze drying, retort processing; and conventional liquid batching, pasteurization and spray drying. Products developed may contain various ingredients including protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals, stabilizers, antioxidants, flavor systems, fiber, prebiotic and probiotic and novel ingredients. Develops manufacturing process and product specifications initially at pilot scale and then for commercial scale-up at co-packing facilities.
The preferred individual will have extensive experience in food manufacturing, development and pilot plant operations and a proven track record of successful product introductions. The person will also manage all phases of new product development including confirming new product prototype design with a diverse group of highly energetic corporate and plant personnel and establishing time lines for project completion. The person will also prepare/provide appropriate documentation and or technical information for new product introductions used to support regulatory filings/registrations for USDA, FDA, EU, Organic Certification, etc., and to address customerís questions.
BS, MS or PhD in Food Science or related degree is required. Advanced degree preferred. Strong Leadership skills highly desired.
A minimum of 7 years or equivalent experience with manufacturing and/or development of commercially marketed nutritional products and a proven track record of successful new product introductions are required. Must have a proven track record in project management, commercial product launches and product development with co-packers. A firm knowledge of various food manufacturing processes and concepts (extrusion, retort processing, freeze drying liquefaction, compounding, evaporation, spray drying, dry blending), and food manufacturing principles including microbiological control, food chemistry, food/ingredient interactions and functionality, is essential. Ability to operate pilot plant equipment is not essential, but is preferred. Prior participation on project teams with previous record of successful project management and technical report writing is required. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are required. Training and/or experience with TQM or team based management environment preferred.
