PLATTEVILLE,
Wis. -- The Grant County Health Department has urged residents to follow good
hygiene practices after about 10 cases of Shigella-related illness were
reported in the Platteville area. Shigella
is a group of bacteria that can cause shigellosis, an acute bacterial
infection of the lining of the intestines. The most common symptom of
shigellosis is diarrhea. The illness spreads because of contaminated food or
water sources and improper hand washing. People
who have experienced diarrhea symptoms for more than two days should see a
physician. Mild
bleach-water solutions or antibacterial wipes can eliminate Shigella bacteria
from surfaces. |
