POSITION SUMMARY

The Food Safety Specialist (Mexico) is located in various locations within California, Yuma, AZ and Mexico. The position reports to and supports the Food Safety Manager. This position is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing systems for measuring and managing conformity to established regulatory, industry and proprietary brand standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Food Safety Program

  • Help support the goals and objectives of Ocean Mist Farms’ Food Safety Program; facilitate and promote by communicating with and educating employees, suppliers, and customers;
  • Develop, implement and enforce Food Safety and Security standards, policies, and programs. Deliver training and development according to these standards;
  • Adhere to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HAACP) as minimum standards;
  • Perform food safety inspections and audits at the field and facility levels;
  • Implement and oversee third-party audits;
  • Assist in troubleshooting food safety problems and implementing product improvements. Help evaluate new testing equipment;
  • Interact with growers, harvesters, cooling operations, and other suppliers and service providers to effectively communicate and enforce Ocean Mist Farms’ food safety objectives.

Technical Analysis

  • Assure proper working order, calibration and accuracy of equipment used to check the food safety/quality of finished products; audit the working order and documentation of scales, thermometers, ORP meters, and metal detectors;
  • Sample and evaluate held product against standards assisting in dispositions.
  • Accurately document and report test results in a timely manner;
  • Make determinations on acceptance or rejection of materials based on testing, experience and consultation, when necessary, with management;
  • Communicate analytical information in proper format to the appropriate manager as required or directed;
  • Review chemical inventory and helps update respective MSDS files.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe working environment and accident-free work record;
  • Develops and maintains positive client relationships;
  • Data entry and report writing;
  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in food science or biological/physical sciences preferred;
  • 4 + years experience in food safety/quality assurance in a manufacturing/and or field environment preferred;
  • Strong technical knowledge of food safety is preferred;
  • Familiarity with HAACP, GMPs, and GAPs;
  • Familiarity with product traceback/recall policies and procedures;
  • Familiarity with luminometers, ORP & PH meters;
  • Good math, written and verbal communication skills (English/Spanish) is required;
  • Generally computer literate with some familiarity with e-mail, spreadsheets and databases;
  • Self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. Must have ability to speak in large group settings to employees, customers and vendors;
  • Candidates must be well organized and comfortable working independently;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is required.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelors Degree in Science or Agriculture preferred, but not required; continuing education in food safety, quality assurance and other job related areas;
  • GMP/HACCP certification is required.

PHYSICAL SKILLS, MENTAL ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to travel and work in remote locations and surrounding regions, including California – Central Coast region, Castroville, Coachella, Imperial, Hollister, Huron, Oxnard; Arizona – Yuma and Mexico; may require walking for long periods of time on uneven terrain as part of field audits;
  • Often standing, walking, sitting, reaching, turning, climbing stairs for long periods of time; ability to lift 50 pounds without undue physical exertion; ability to stoop, reach, walk and other physical activities associated with an office and field environment; ability to communicate verbally and comprehend verbal instructions; requires sufficient sight and hearing to perform all job functions;
  • Ability to work in a plant, cooler & office environment with an average range between 34 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit; ability to work outdoors in varied weather, including extreme cold and heat up to 110F+ degrees;
  • Can-do attitude with willingness to proactively solve issues; ability to carry out defined procedures with specific instructions; ability to learn new duties with minimal repetition; Strong interpersonal skills, including strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to manage a project from its initiation to completion with minimal supervision; ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, customers, vendors and peers;
  • Office equipment to be used (not inclusive list): 10-key calculator by touch, telephone, computer keyboard, photocopy machine, fax, postage meter and other clerical and office equipment.
