Meridian Bioscience Inc. said the Food and Drug Administration has approved its rapid test for Campylobacter bacteria, which causes foodborne illness.

The ImmunoCard Stat! Campy test is simple to perform and provides results in 20 minutes, Meridian said in a news release. The test is already being marketed in Europe and has been approved for distribution in Canada.

Campylobacter is one of the most common causes of diarrheal illness and is most often transmitted by poorly cooked poultry, the company said.

Meridian (NASDAQ: VIVO), based in Newtown, manufactures, markets and distributes diagnostic test kits, purified reagents and related products.
