Overview:

Food Safety Campaign

The Food Safety Campaign is a national advocacy effort seeking to achieve six key reforms, including expanding the inspection process; increasing resources to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); strengthening FDA enforcement powers; improving coordination among the relevant agencies; implementing better monitoring systems; and crafting strong and clear standards for food safety in the law.  By deploying rigorous research, sophisticated outreach, and by working in concert with a broad coalition of consumer advocates, scientific experts and industry leaders, we are working to achieve policies that will protect Americans' health by better securing our food supply.  

 

Position Overview

The manager, Food Safety Campaign will direct a strategic advocacy campaign and initiate, coordinate and supervise outreach and public communication efforts regarding the Pew recommendations on food safety with key stakeholders, including health and consumer organizations and other advocacy groups, Administrative agency officials, and Congress.   This position is based in Washington, DC and will work closely with Pew Health Group staff and report the Director of Food and Consumer Product Safety. The Food Safety Campaign currently funded as a two-year campaign.  This campaign and position is approved through March 2011 with the possibility of renewal depending on the initiative's progress, board approval and continued funding.

Responsibilities:

The manager is responsible for directing and managing the implementation of the Food Safety advocacy campaign. This includes setting measurable goals and targets; developing timelines; assessing progress and, when needed, taking appropriate steps to redirect the campaign's focus in order to maximize possibility for achieving success.  

 

Activities of the campaign include:

  • Develop and implement a national advocacy campaign strategy focused on advancing reform based on the PHG Food Safety Campaign plan.
  • Raise the national profile of the urgent need to reform food safety programs.
  • Generate significant print and electronic media coverage nationally and selected state markets.
  • Engage a network of food safety leaders and other champions to generate public support for the campaign.
  • Plan and release of periodic and timely reports that convey to the press and policy makers the need for acting on the PHG food safety campaign's recommendations. 
  • Engage policy makers and advocates in discussions about the need for PHG food safety campaign recommendations through educational meetings, presentations and panels. 
  • Work closely with PCT staff on all aspects of the campaign.

Requirements:

  • Experience in managing a successful advocacy campaign(s). Experience need not be directly related to food safety issues, though familiarity with these issues is preferred. 
  • At least 8 years of relevant professional experience, including a solid understanding of the federal policy-making process, especially in domestic policy issues. Significant experience working with the federal government (including Congress and federal agencies) or at issue-based national advocacy groups is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with key tools in advocacy and policy change, including policy analysis, issue campaigns, communications strategies, and grassroots or grasstops organizing.
  • Able to set short- and long-term planning goals in line with program strategy. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ease in briefly summarizing the essence of issues and means to address them. Strong oral, presentation, facilitation, and written communication skills such that complex ideas, thoughts and concepts are clearly articulated for a general audience. Clear, effective writing style. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes. Excellent listening skills. Highly articulate. 
  • Media-savvy and politically astute. Able to use effective marketing techniques and media exposure to communicate the impact of current polices on food safety. 
  • Exhibit skills of diplomacy. Able to work productively with a wide array of different people and institutions that frequently disagree with and are in competition with one another. 
  • Strong understanding of how to manage by influencing others and the ability to read nuances of meaning accurately.
  • Seasoned judgment, able to make decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.

It is anticipated that the individual in this position will travel periodically, including to PCT's Philadelphia office as needed.
