The Department of Food Science seeks a candidate to provide leadership on current & emerging issues pertaining to the Food Safety Modernization Act with initial emphasis on food safety as it relates to the growing, harvesting and marketing fresh produce. This position will be responsible for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating comprehensive issue-based educational outreach programming related to food safety regulations for fresh produce for audiences which may include producers, entrepreneurs, agencies, institutions and businesses such as farmers markets, and processors. The individual will be responsible for teaching best management practices related to the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act to small produce farmers, produce processors and county extension agents. The position is expected to work across departments and programs such as Horticulture, Agribusiness and Economics, and others as appropriate to the issues.

PhD in food science, food technology, food microbiology, horticulture science or related field with emphasis in produce safety from an accredited university. Strong background in food safety as it relates to horticultural practices, water quality and organic farming as defined by the National Organic Standards Board. Evidence of effective teaching skills in informal settings. Ability and desire to work closely and cooperatively with faculty in the department and across disciplines. Ability to work with the media and develop web base information. Ability to communicate with wide variety of audiences. Ability to obtain extramural funds. Will require in state travel and some evening & weekend work.
