To serve as the lead staff resource on scientific and technical information and issues related to food health & nutrition programs and project tasks, by managing and providing direction of IFT’s initiatives within this key focus area.

Overarching Responsibilities
• Leads and manages the development of nutrition/dietetic-related communications and activities.
• Serves as a principal scientific and technical resource for internal staff and external participants.
• Drives content to and actively encourages participation in IFT’s KEY Focus Areas, particularly Food Health & Nutrition
• Leads or actively participates as staff in IFT volunteer panels, task forces, work groups, etc. and as such, partners with chair(s) to effectively manage group initiatives
• Effectively writes, reviews and delivers scientific articles, reports, etc. ensuring accuracy, consistency and professional appearance.
• Provides scientific input into the development and review of proposals, scientific plans, and final reports to contracting agencies and organizations.
• Coordinates and may implement scientific and educational programming such as workshops, symposia, conferences, Annual Meeting scientific sessions and short courses, webinars, etc.
• Monitors scientific literature and information sources to stay abreast of advances and current issues in food science, food technology, human health, and related fields of particular interest to IFT.
• Efficiently updates staff on timely issues in food science, food technology, human health, and related fields.
• Develops relationships and collaborations with other representatives of the food and agricultural community from industry, trade associations, academia, scientific societies, and consumer groups.
Public Policy Responsibilities
• Provides IFT staff and members continuous and timely information on the status and impact of science policy developments relative to nutrition health & wellness
• Develops public comments on various topics related to food science, food technology, human health, and related fields.
• Attends select public meetings, e.g., Congressional hearings and Government advisory committee meetings that are of importance to the office.
• Generates recommendations on science policy initiatives worthy of attention and offer guidance on the appropriate role of IFT in science policy leadership, support, liaison and networking.
• Develops relationships and collaborations with other representatives of the food and agricultural community from industry, trade associations, academia, scientific societies, and consumer groups.
• Serves as a scientific resource for policy makers.
• Leads coordination of IFT’s Congressional Support for Science Award.
• Coordinates nominations of IFT members to federal advisory committees.
• Serves as IFT liaison to various Codex Alimentarius Committees, coalitions, etc.
• Updates staff on significant nutrition industry implications for IFT.

Grants and Contracts Responsibilities
• Serves as the principal scientific and technical resource for internal project staff and external project participants. May also serve as Project Director on select tasks.
• Leads or assists in developing responses to requests for proposals from government agencies and other organizations, ensuring that scientific and technical issues are thoroughly addressed;
• Assists in identifying experts in pertinent professions and areas of specialization to serve on as task order panel and sub-panel members and as reviewers to ensure appropriate expertise is represented.
• Guides searches of the scientific literature and other print and electronic information resources, including coordinating meetings to gather information for task orders and proposals, ensuring that searches are focused and comprehensive.
• Reviews results of searches for scientific literature and information to determine the appropriate material to forward to panel and sub-panel members, ensuring that relevant and useful information is provided on a timely basis.
• Assist in the planning of meetings and/or conference calls to conduct task scope of work to ensure scientific and technical issues are thoroughly addressed and to make efficient use of the time spent with project participants;

Experience Requirements
• Registered Dietician preferred
• Advanced degree in the field of Food Science or Nutrition
• Established connections within the global scientific and regulatory community, government and industry preferred
• Experience in strategic planning, project management, staff management, and fiscal management.
• Experience building results oriented partnerships and alliances.
• 5 plus years of professional experience
• Experience in association or not-for-profit environment a plus
• Experience (or interest in) serving as media spokesperson preferred

Skill Requirements
• Proven leadership skills- able to manage and lead committees, task forces, and project teams
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop relationships with individuals and organizations
